Default Pern book update

Just an update on my plans for my book about Pern.

So far, I have the following chapters planned; these are:

Chapter I
* Dragonflight
* Dragonquest
* Dragonsong
* Dragonsinger
* The White Dragon
* Dragondrums

Chapter 2
* The Renegades of Pern
* All the Weyrs of Pern
* The Dolphins of Pern
* The Masterharper of Pern
* The Skies of Pern

Chapter 3
* Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern
* Nerilka's Story
* Dragonsdawn
* Dragonseye
* The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall
* A Gift of Dragons
* "Beyond Between"

Chapter 4
* Dragon's Kin (with Todd McCaffrey)
* Dragonsblood (by Todd McCaffrey)
* Todd's books

Any comments you would care to make?

Todd's books... but you do list Dragonsblood separate? DKin and Dfire are said to be co-writtern by Todd though insiders think Anne did not put in much beyond comments; so if you are writing up about style and such you might want to bundle all the books Todd's involved with or writes.

Harper Hall is usually treated separatly becasue it is written for another audience than the other boks, as is The Smallest Dragonboy SS.

I would not have listed GoD as a boom since it only holds short stories, only one of them original to the book (Ever the Twain). Which you don't list while you do list Beyond Between separate (probably because it is in an anthology edited by someone else, like Runner, which is also in GoD... confusing

I would have bundled the short stories (and look for development of writing in those, spread over the decades) and books separately, probably quite strict, thus not listing Chronicles as a book.

So, Hans, you would suggest something like:

Chapter I
* Dragonflight
* Dragonquest
* The White Dragon

Chapter 2
* Dragonsong
* Dragonsinger
* Dragondrums

Chapter 3
* The Renegades of Pern
* All the Weyrs of Pern
* The Dolphins of Pern
* The Masterharper of Pern
* The Skies of Pern

Chapter 4
* Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern
* Nerilka's Story
* Dragonsdawn
* Dragonseye

Chapter 5

Short stories in:

* The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall
* A Gift of Dragons
* "Beyond Between"

Chapter 4

Todd's work:

* Dragon's Kin
* Dragonsfire
* Todd's other books which I am too lazy to list right now

These will be, in essence introductory chapters more than analysis, which will be more thematic that chronological.

If introductory, yes, I would have a setup like your last one

Again, if you are doing style analysis your best setup would be pure chronologically, seperated by decades? That would roughly give you five chapters, too.

You don't mention "Runner of Pern" in Legends ed. R. Silverberg. It came out in 98. I'm pretty sure that there's another shorty in Legends 2 ,but don't own that one; I had to borrow it from the library

Thanks, P'ter: "Runner" is in Gift, along with other short stories, and the one in Legends 2 is "Beyond Between". I appreciate your interest.

As for style analysis, Hans, what of approaching them in terms of similarity of nature, ie. original three, Harper Hall, early Pern, etc. rather than strict chronology? I'm thinking here more of the thematic groupings, and style could be covered in a chapter or two, alongside gender, and other thematic chapters (innovation & tradition, power & responsibility, etc).

you should decide on how to approach, Ghyle. But since you just posted a list to begin with I wondered what that approach would be as it is essential to how your chapter should be set up, right?

But your last remark is clarifying and sounds good, yes.

Perhaps, Hans, dividing the book into sections with X-Y chapters per section, would be useful.

Something like

Section
I Overview
Chapter I
* Dragonflight
* Dragonquest
* The White Dragon
Chapter 2
* Dragonsong
* Dragonsinger
* Dragondrums
Chapter 3
* The Renegades of Pern
* All the Weyrs of Pern
* The Dolphins of Pern
* The Masterharper of Pern
* The Skies of Pern
Chapter 4
* Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern
* Nerilka's Story
* Dragonsdawn
* Dragonseye
Chapter 5
Short stories in:
* The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall
* A Gift of Dragons
* "Beyond Between"
Chapter 6
Todd's work:
* Dragon's Kin
* Dragonsfire
* Todd's other books which I am too lazy to list right now
II Themes
III Motifs
IV Style

would be the way to go, with chapters varying from "Harper Hall" to "Gender".

Thoughts?

All looks to be very interesting stuff Ghyle,

I have to say I prefer your original layout - Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and Dragondrums are not always marketed as YA books - in the UK, at least, they are marketed as Adult Sci-Fi - the same as the rest of Pern. I know the reason behind deferring to the way the books are marketed in the USA (although I don't always agree with doing so) - but the USA is just one of the markets these books are placed on.

It would be intersting to see an analysis of why they are treated so differently round the world. Perhaps something of that could be included in what you are doing?

That's a great idea, Jayru, thanks! I had decided on the three since they form to me a trilogy that parallels in part the foci of the other three books, and, also, because the focus is upon Harper Hall rather than directly upon the dragonriders.

No problems

I quite like idea of a guide that takes an in depth look at the series as it has developed and grown. It will be interesting to see your conclusions and insights into the books.

If I can be of any help, in anyway, with the UK editions let me know. I have a relativly "good" contact within Transworld - although I am beginning to wonder at the accuracy of some of the info they have recently passed to me

And of course Dragonsong and Dragonsinger take place at the same time as Dragonquest. I read the first two before I ever read the latter, so it was exciting to find out more about events only mentioned briefly before!
