Default My Dutch Pern Series finally complete

There's not that many Pern books translated into Dutch, even with some of them published twice because Anne's original publishing company was taken over.

But one book, the translation of The Renegades of Pern, kept eluding me time and again. Dutch readers seem to hang on to their books After a "near miss" (somebody selling to another bidder too soon - while I was prepared to go even higher) I decided to leave WANTED ads on several Dutch internet eBay like pages where that was possible.

And lo and behold, a very nice bloke who sold books to earn money towards buying music and such for a male choir in the south of my country mailed em that they had a copy and what would I pay for it? I was completely honest with him because he was so nice and paid him the current market price for the trade paperback (about $15 ex postage).

I just received the book and it is in absolute pristine state! Jo Roelofsen, thank you and lots of succes with the Weerter Male Choir!!

That is a beautiful book, Hans. And your generosity paid off in getting such a clean copy! A bitter sweet moment tho, eh? Now it's complete you need not be hunting for it and that is sad in a way. For me, one of the best parts of collecting is the hunt. Enjoy the set, Hans! I know there's more out there you'll be hunting for tho.

There's definitely more out there, Becky But no more Dutch Anne McCaffrey's and though you are right the sigh of relief felt much, much better than the adrenaline of the hunt

Cheryl was right, you know, I was starting to feel a bit silly. I mean, me being Dutch, owning litterally hundreds of Anne's books from all over the world but missing one of the set that are published and printed in my own country?

I'm just glad you've got the set completed now.

I've missed hunting for books and when I went thru my collection a few weeks ago decided that I need to get better copies of some of the old sf magazines. So that's my new hunt.

Hmm, sounds like a hint to me! I don't know if I'll start collecting covers or not tho. Maybe just ones that are interesting to me, not sure. There are still some books out there that I'd like to have, so saving $$ would be the best thing to do. I don't know...decisions decisions!!!

Congratulations Hans!

Maybe I ought to start collecting the Danish books. If I ever have children it could be a good way to intruduce them to Anne's books, and since there are so few of Anne's books translated into Danish it shouldn't pose too great a task to complete a Danish collection.

How many of Anne's books are translated into Dutch?

Hans, This is wonderful for you to finally get all of the Pern Series, in your own lanuage, it must have felt awful to have gone so long without it. I konw that you have such a huge, wonderful collection of the Pern Series, from all over the world. Someday maybe all of the foreign speaking "Ship's" will gather in my collection, at least I hope they will.

Of course Matt

This is the whole lot, the only Pern titles that are translated into Dutch. If you look carefully you will see three titles appear twice: Drakevlucht/Drakenvlucht (Dragonflight), Draketocht/Drakentocht (Dragonquest) and De witte draak (The White Dragon). Those were published twice due to a language reform (hence the subtle differences in the first two titles) and because Anne's original Dutch publisher (De Boekerij) got taken over by a larger one (Het Spectrum).

De Boekerij used the Steve Weston cover art and after the first trilogy published: De afvalligen van Pern (Renegades; as volume 4 in the series) and De redding van Pern (All the Weyrs; as volume 5).
Then Het Spectrum took over, republished the first three and after that went on with De dageraad van de draken (Dragonsdawn), Drakenoog (Dragonseye/RSR) and Drakenvrouwe (Moreta).
All the Het Spectrum printings got new cover art by a Dutch artist called Hans Pieko on a white background.

The Harper Hall trilogy and the titles unmentioned above were never published in translation. I asked Anne at one time if I could start translating the Harper Hall trilogy, as I thought it would be an good product to lure young Dutch readers to Pern, and she said OK but admitted that she could not demand a certain translator, just advise. So I do have a start of Dragonsong in Dutch (to show if a publisher should be interested) but doubt if it will ever be published. It is nice to know I have Anne's blessing though (I also wrote reports for her on Dutch translations)

OOOOOOOOH Hans, these are fantastic, I love the covers on these, Thank you so much for letting us see these. I especially like the lover picture with all of the covers lined up, you can really see the cover nicely.

I see your window ledge comes in handy for photo taking also. I am going to have to remember that when taking my own.

That's because that particular ledge is next to my computer, Maelin, and because it was overcast. You can't use opposing light in a picture usually, so when it would have been sunny I would have moved to another spot

I think Pieko's paintings are very fantasy-like but at the time was mostly glad Het Spectrum did three more titles and appreciated that us Dutch at least got our own covers instead of borrowing from the British (though I like Steve Weston's art better)

I like the Pieko covers, although the head isn't quite as equine as I'd like, looking a bit too much like a roc's beak. However, I still prefer those to Weston's holey wings.

I really like the perspective picture on Dragonseye, the Red Star shining through the eye rock really makes it look like an eye!

Congrats on the completed collection!

Granath, I am with you, I do like them, the White Dragon cover, is a little to cartoonist for my taste, but the rest, especially the Dragondawn cover I like quite a bit. It's good that their are original copies in written in Dutch, and that Hans has gotten them all now.

Hans, I do need to practice with my camera, and perhaps get a new one.

Any one have any sugestions for a nice model of camera, that won't break the bank. Maybe some model (#'s) would be good, then we can go and check them out . Maybe my hubby will buy me a new one so I can take good pics for the site, like some of the rest of you!!!

P.S. I think I am going to put this in the Lounge Cafe, and see what happens.
