as performed by Tania Opland and Mike Freeman at Dragon*Con here are Elizabeth Ann Scarborough's lyrics to an older favorite
![]() You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me You Seal lyrics: Elizabeth Ann Scarborough set to: You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille CHORUS: You picked a fine time to leave me, you seal. The babe that I bore you just makes my head real. He'll only eat kippers, has four lovely flippers, Wants to dive down the well for his meals. You picked a fine time to leave me, you seal. You are a selkie or that's what you tell me Though I'd have sworn you were a man. A right comely boy-o, you gave me much joy O, but I never did understand I'd have cause to re-gret once you got your feet wet But a selkie as I've come to know, On hitting the water can swim like an otter And balance a ball on his nose (chorus) Though we parted friendly I think you should send me Some child support, that is my wish Since I moved to Ohio, it's hard oh, you'll never know To just keep that poor kid in fish. And if I ever remarry it must be to some faerie Of selkie descent or at least To some understanding and most undemanding guy In the employ of Greenpeace. (chorus)

I love the words to the song, and only wish that I could have been at Dragon Con. To have been there to see both Elizabeth and Tania perform it....that must have been hilarious.

Mike Freeman and Tania Opland sang that at their guest of honour gig at the Orkney Folk Festival last spring. It went down an absolute storm.

According to Tanya they sang it at a Folk Fest in Orkney where the locals take their Selkies seriously. They nearly got thrown out!

That's not what Tania told me. She said it brought down the house because those people have heard every selkie song in the book and that one was new to them. 'Course it was. I just made it up!
Tania and I are old friends from Alaska. For a short time we were roommates before she came to Seattle to pursue her music career. When I came down here we were roomies again until I found a house where I could keep my cats in the style to which they wished to become accustomed. When I wrote the SONGKILLER SAGA books, we kinda sorta in a small way went on the road with it--every time I had a signing she came along and I did a reading and when we got to a song she sang it or we sang it together. Now that she has Mike and they are hopping back and forth across the ocean all the time, we don't get to sing together as much but we have been known to "meow" the Blue Danube skater's Waltz all the way from Poulsbo to the airport, two hours away. |

Nah, eann, he's thinking of Pilot, who started out life as a dog in Jane Eyre and was good as a navigator but was, like, OCD about washing his hands, and so mean to that lovely Mexican guy - you know, Juan or Esteban or whatever his name was.
