Default Tonight...

Was about to cross the bridge from the town across the river, on our way home and what do we find? Ma and bubs possum. Bubs was trying to climb a palm tree whilst mum was climbing the gum tree. When they worked out we were watching, bubs took a few minutes to try and work out how to get back to ma possum. Eventually bubs got back to ma and they sat there watching us watching them Junior tried to get a photo on his camera but it didn't work out properly. Junior and I had a discussion about keeping wildlife as pets, how long they live etc. We regularly see kookaburras, lizards, magpies etc around here

I love to watch the wildlife. I am way out in the country in Texas and we have a large population of wildlife around us. They are so fascinating to watch.

I think your possums are a bit different critters from the ones in these parts, jube. I used to have a huge mama possum living under the house. She never actually got violent but I have to admit I was sort of relieved last fall when I saw what I believe had to have been her on the side of the road a little ways down from here. There's no shortage of wildlife where I live and I try to peacefully co-exist with them but pet them? I don't think so.

We see a lot opossums around here. In the old house they would come in & eat out of the cat food bin. Every now & then we would get racoons as well. We also see a LOT of deer.

We have oppossum, raccoons, deer, rabbits, squirrels, turkeys, and armadillos.

Of course, we live in the woods.

Sandi, quite likely our possums are quite different to yours. I think most overseas people call them opossums which are a different breed to ours. Haven't really looked into it much. Forgot about the cockatoos, budgies, lorikeets and galahs at the local football oval. Seen quite a lot of birds there.

At my dad's place, his is in the country here in Wisconsin, we would see deer, and squirrels, I recall hearing one bird, 'sound like an old steam power thing starting up to me' in the breeding season when I was growing up.

Out in the country where we moved, right by the woods, we see deers (but mostly in winter time) and rabbits.

That's the one, AnnMarie Well done! Bubs was following mum until he/she worked out that we were about 3 metres away and watching them. 5 minutes of entertainment on both sides, usually they scamper away on us before we get a chance to get close to them. Thanks

Yes they are, by a long shot. When I am driving at night and one comes into my headlights, it is a really spooky site. They just stare at you.

When I was working in Westchester county as a camp councilor, we used to go into White Plains once a week as a group in the can. One night, we were on our way back to camp...I was half asleep. John hit the breaks, Shiobban shrieked a little, and Steve (From NYC, who you would THINK knew what an Opposum looked like) said he thought it was a bald racoon. I opened my eyes, looked, calmly said "It is a possum, City Boy. Go back to the burroughs" and went back to sleep.

The American oppossum is a nasty critter. Carrion eater of the worst sort. Scavenger, and the sort of animal that will kill an animal of the same size, given a chance. They'll play dead with a larger animal, but I've had one cat killed by one, and another wounded. They act very shy when approached by a similar sized animal, then lunge for the throat when they get the chance. Copperheads are less dangerous.

Alas, we live in a coastal village so most of our wildlife is wet and hard to see! Still, we do get seals now and again, and lots of wading birds. And in the country when we go visiting pals, we occasionally find deer. Saw a small herd the other day, broad daylight, grazing in a harvested field. I couldn't believe it, but there they were.
No possums, though.

Only in Moonee Ponds, darling!

Found cockatoos on my way home from work, Monday morning. Today's version, is those little damn sparrows eating out of the dog's bowl. What do they think the dog's bowl's for? The shopping centre for birds of course!

Well darling hubby printed a heap of photos for me as we'll be putting them into the local show in the photo section, next sunday. I'll let you how we went as some of the photos we've put up here are probably good enough to be put in. Mainly hubby and Junior but I've thrown a couple in myself so....wish us luck, please. I'm going to put in something about Aussiecon too ~ I made a fire lizard for my costume in the Masquerade so I'd like to see how my green dragonet goes .
