Default Astronomy question

Kibbie wants to study astronomy. Is there a book that would be good for her to start with? I don't want to spend a lot of money until I know she will keep like it want to keep studying it.
THANKS

There are all sorts of books out there, but have you thought of starting with the internet?

http://nineplanets.org/ is a great resource on the solar system, and they have links to other resources towards the bottom of this page - http://nineplanets.org/intro.html

This site looks interesting: http://www.kidsastronomy.com/ ...and a quick scan suggests that it's both easy to understand and reasonable accurate

Most of the big observatories will do some form of outreach/public ed stuff - try here for Hubble: http://hubblesite.org/explore_astronomy/

Oh, and APOD of course! http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/

How's that for starters?

In books: "Guide to the Night Sky" by Patrick Moore. In U.K. it's published by Philip's. There are copies on e-bay varying from £1 - £13.84! If you want I'll get one posted to you.

There is also SLOOH..which is a chatroom and more for amature astronomers. Hubs and Kidling both belong to it. But I don't recall the yearly fee. There are several on-line radios shows, as well.

It's not a book but a planisphere is fun and useful for working out constellations.

I don't know if it's even still published or not but years ago I had a subscription to "Sky and Telescope Magazine" which was useful to my daughter when she was in school.

This is one of my earliest books, which I still have and use occasionally. It's got a lot of stuff on the constellations as well as planets. http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-me...e=UTF8&index=0
National Audobon Society Field Guide to the Night Sky

there were others, but I don't remember the titles and doubt they're published anymore. The on on Mars is probably outdated, too... heh
