Hello.... Hopefully, I'm figuring this out... a little different from sites/groups I administer. Just briefly, I'm 75 years old, read pretty much all of the McCaffrey books as they originally came out up to the time she started writing jointly with her son. Just wasn't as interested in stories not directly about the Dragonrider characters or that final Threadfall time.

Just finished (?) re-reading the basic Dragonrider series through Skies of Pern. A question has been bugging me since that book came out and is the basic reason I'm here. I've tried to look ahead through the offered short synopses of the books after Skies of Pern as that book left one issue unresolved, i.e. a final resolution of the question of Toric and the Abominators.

I know that some characters and issues of the story moved in and out of shorter novellas and/or short stories, but even there, I can't identify anything specific that would have covered this.

Can anyone refer me to an appropriate book/story I might have missed or was this issue just never revisited?

Thanks

Dick Wightman

I don't think it was ever resolved, Kiteguy. I suppose she hoped to do something more about them eventually and was never able to do it.

Evening all!

Think I may have actually registered and posted here at some point in the distant, distant past...but it must have been somewhere in the region of ten years ago...aaaand I honestly can't remember whether I'm making that up.

I stumbled headlong into the world of Pern about 15 years ago. Prior to the 26th December 1998, dragons in my mind had been little more than a mythological curiosity which little thought was given. Then however following watching Dragonheart, an outright fascination developed which lead to me doing an outright assault in reading terms of anything featuring them I could lay my grubby paws on. Bearing in mind this was a good few years before I had either internet of regular bookshop access, I had to make do with what I had! After a couple of months working my way through what I tracked down in the school library, I came across in my parents bookshelves, Dragondrums and a very very well read copy of Dragonflight; both of which were both devoured in short order. It was all downhill from there really and I've ended up with pretty much the entire of the Pern series being bought over the years up until about 2006 when I moved into a flat the size of a shoebox which has really precluded any further books being bought. Well, until a month or so ago when I picked up a Kindle...so I've now bought the whole series *again* ...and lost more hours over the last month than I care to think about!

Zelandeth (or Zel...it's easier to type) is actually a persona who's partly an extension of myself and partly roleplay character in (non Pernese) dragon form, hence the apparently mis-coloured and mane-wearing image in the avatar. He takes on most of my online presence and these days I think there are more people who use the name offline as on following one of my college classes being complicated by there being five of us with the same name - and it stuck!

I did consider picking a more "in world" fitting name for here, but figured after a bit of thought to just stick to being "myself" for the sake of simplicity was most sensible. A bit of idle trivia is that the 'th' ending on the name was actually settled on a good three or four months before I even heard of Anne McCaffrey or discovered that naming convention for dragons. Wasn't actually a deliberate stab at copying the convention, it just seemed to fit.

Currently enjoying re-reading through the books, including quite a few which have been published since I was last looking at them, with a more mature and patient mindset than I had as a twelve year old, and only finding the world even more reach and captivating than I did last time around.

I look forward hopefully to joining in the discussions on here and hope that I can offer some useful input to them.

WELCOME! Kiteguy and Zel, Please feel free to make yourselves at home.

Toric as far as I know was never resolved. Most of the abominators were exiled, at least the ones involved in Master Robinton's kidnapping.

Hi! I first encountered Anne McCaffrey's worlds in 1978, when a fellow I worked with told me I should try Dragonflight. I read straight through Dragondrums. At the time, I had just moved from Athens, Georgia to Las Cruces, NM. The library had no more McCaffrey and I, fresh out of college, couldn't afford to buy anything but Lipton Soup. I moved to Denver, discovered a whole bunch of different science fiction writers. I occasionally read her books, but lots of other life got in the way. I truthfully haven't read any Pern since Moreta.

After she died, though, I discovered how far behind I had fallen. I put a reread on my list after finishing catching up with several other writers. When Dragonwriter was released, I asked my library to get it, but they chose not to do so. Instead, they got it for me through interlibrary loan, which cost a financially strapped institution nearly as much as buying it would have. I promoted it to the top of the reading list because I couldn't let that money go to waste. Halfway through, I realized a few things:
1. I hadn't been to Pern for far too long.
2. Most of the people I've know who loved her work were awesome people.
3. The internet means they're easy to find.

I had a successful career as a technical writer, mainly because I was raising two children mostly alone. Since they're grown and giving me grandkids, I now pick up freelance editing jobs where I can and take care of my granddaughter. Since I'm about to start a read of Ms. McCaffrey's books, I thought I'd check in here. After cruising the forums a little, I discovered that, not only did y'all look like nice people, some of you play word games.

So here I am. I apologize for jumping into the word game before introducing myself. They are a weakness of mine, kind of like chocolate.

Thank you all for your warm welcome! I apologize for falling off the grid--I had to finish Dragonwriter by today and give it back to the library, so the next lucky person can read it. Because it's interlibrary loan, it can't be renewed, so I had to hurry a bit. I kept having to put it down to wipe my eyes, I can tell you!

I'll be on a little more, I think. This seems like a lovely place!

Hello, I'm returning to the world of Anne McCaffrey fandom after a decade and a half away. Long ago, I joined the forum on GEnie (anybody here remember that?). A lot has happened to me since then.

In late 2004 I lost a leg and a good portion of my eyesight to an infection related to diabetes. For years, I couldn't read, not even my favorite Anne McCaffrey books. Thanks to modern technology and the care of an excellent ophthalmologist, I can now read on my Kindle, and using the Kindle apps on my phone and tablet. AH! My long period of desolation was over.

I have downloaded all the recent books (including Todd's Pern books), and I'm reading through them all again.

I've rebuilt my life as well, and now I'm happily living in a friend's house, along with my cat Lily (who is "helping" me type this). I'm working for one of the largest employers in Orange County CA (you can guess who, I'm sure), and active in my church and in a community chorus.

I'll be posting in other forums, so keep an eye out for me!

Hello and Happy New Year!
I was introduced to Pern in my early teens and it soon became a second home to me. In the years since I've slowly read other series but there are still quite a few that I haven't yet got a hold of (Restoree!!!) as I generally pick them up at the lifeline second hand book fairs we have here in Canberra, Australia. This Christmas I was given Black Horses for the King, which I'll be starting as soon as I'm done with Dragonwriter.

I sincerely regret being too shy to email Anne before she passed with my gratitude and thanks for writing such wonderful worlds that people like me could explore.

Hello, I am a massive Anne fan - i think she is wonderful and I love spending time curled up with her books. It is truly incredible!

I am new here!

Hi! *waves* I'm FireDitto and I've been a member here for a while, according to my profile, though I've clearly been lacking in the making of posts department! I'm in my mid twenties, and I live in Australia.

I've been reading Pern since I was in my early teens - and I have a soft spot for Acorna, too - though I mostly spend my time on Pern via the AU canon play-by-post forum I've been running for the past two years. My favourite dragonriders by far are blue and greenriders and I feel they definitely get the most fun out of life (and the harshest challenges, too, but what's life without a challenge?)

Anyway, yes! I've been poking around a bit, and you guys look like a really great group

Hi FireDitto

Have you also found 'New Kitchen Table'?
