Thumbs up Pern on Earth, not Igen but you get the Idea

Hang En Cave, Vietnam
Photograph by Carsten Peter, National Geographic

Going underground, expedition members enter Hang En, a cave tunneled out by the Rao Thuong River. Dwindling to a series of ponds during the dry months, the river can rise almost 300 feet (91 meters) during the flood season, covering the rocks where cavers stand.

Santorini, Greece
Photograph by C.T. Feng, My Shot

I went to Santorini toward the end of the season last year, when most of the shops on the island started shutting down for the winter. I wanted to get a nice twilight shot of the often photographed Oia. I used the meter on the camera to expose the shots, but it was consistently darker than what I had hoped for. So for the heck of it, I just left it exposed as long as possible, and the color just took on a life of its own and the town became a beautiful model doll. October 2007

(This photograph was submitted to My Shot.)

Reminds me of one I spotted, and Han's trip

Cliffs of Moher, Ireland
Photograph by Jim Richardson, National Geographic

The craggy Cliffs of Moher wrap around the western coast of County Clare, providing a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean. The rocky cliffs reach 702 feet (214) meters at their highest point and stretch nearly five miles (eight kilometers) across.

Photo Tip: When your subject is of indeterminate size—a mountain, a body of water, a snowscape—add a sense of scale by including something of known size, such as a person, a car, a tree, or an animal. This helps viewers understand what they’re looking at.

Now this one reminds me of a member over at NKT, and how some of those cliff around Pern might look!

When I spotted the image it remind me of Landing in a way! With the ash, not the rest of it.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/nature/mt-st-helens.html
Program Description
One of the most violent natural disasters of our time, the colossal eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 blasted away an entire mountainside. Over 200 square miles of pristine forest were buried under millions of tons of lava, ash, mud, and avalanche debris. How could life ever return to this barren moonscape? A lone ecologist, Charlie Crisafulli, spent months in the blast zone and was astonished and puzzled by how quickly plants and animals colonized the wasteland. In this program, stunning cinematography and time-lapse photography trace the dramatic story of how Crisafulli witnessed life's return and figured out the puzzle. Now another question arises: How soon could another catastrophic eruption occur?

Just without Threadfall to add to the mix

This is some more stuff on the Chile volcano ash circles globe, returns home
http://www.yahoo.com/_ylt=AqsAPZXkWH..._chile_volcano
I just spotted this.
– 1 hr 59 mins ago
SANTIAGO, Chile – The ash cloud from a Chilean volcano that has been erupting for nearly two weeks has circled the globe and come home again.
The returning cloud — which has disrupted flights in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Australia and New Zealand on its around-the-world trip — on Friday forced Chilean officials to cancel domestic flights for the first time since the Cordon Caulle volcano began erupting June 4.
LAN airlines suspended flights to the cities of Puerto Montt, Coyhaique and Punta Arenas in the far south of the South American country. While ash from Cordon Caulle has wreaked havoc with air travel abroad, it had left Chile's internal flights largely untouched until Friday.
"The tip of the cloud that has traveled around the world is more or less in front of Coyhaique," said Civil Aviation Office chief Pablo Ortega. Coyhaique is 800 kilometers (500 miles) south of the volcano.
Chilean authorities evacuated 3,500 people living near the volcano after it began erupting but some have since returned.
The governor of Ranco province, Eduardo Holck, said the volcano is emitting a fine ash that is scattering over the Nilahue river valley.
The government, however, maintained a red alert for communities near Cordon Caulle. Chile's National Geology and Mines Service warned that volcanic activity could begin again "with episodes similar or greater in intensity that was has occurred."
On Thursday, the government of the Argentine province of Neuquen declared an economic emergency to aid towns where falling ash from Chile's volcano is endangering livestock and keeping tourists away.
The decree by Gov. Jorge Sapag will mean that those affected can receive tax benefits, among other measures.
The ash has blanketed towns across the border in Argentina.
In the area of Villa La Angostura up to one foot (30 centimeters) of ash has accumulated on the ground. The eruption came just as resorts in the mountain towns were preparing for ski season.
Argentina's regional airports in Patagonia have also been shut down for more than a week due to the cloud of fine grit, which can damage airplane engines. *
*mJust like in Pern's Dragons of Pern Dragonsdawn, and Chronicles of Pern: Dolphins' Bell, For that how Landing got covered, and also, the way it can damage, both sled and dragon's wings too. Hunans had more problems, with the ash, but the the dolphins were less effect,

I would say so, 'plot bunny' or yarn unwinding at the wrong time.
