Default Sydney visit!

Well, it's about time I warned you: I'll be offline for 16 days or so from next week.

On my Wednesday, early, I'll be heading off to Sydney for a fornight (mostly), with a weekend of that visit spent in Wollongong. I'll be mainly working in the State Library, upon a bibliography, but I also hope to catch up with people in both Wollongong and Sydney.

If anyone is in the area, and would appreciate meeting this hairy little critter, please say so, pm me or drop me an email, and we can discuss details.

Otherwise, have fun while I'm away, and please--leave me lots and lots to catch up on!

I'm sure I'll have a wonderful time: I'll get to work in the State Library, look at the Brennan collection, donate material to the University of Sydney library, catch up with friends, my sister, her daughter, and another nephew (brother's son), and stay overnight with a dearly loved Latvian friend of the family.

Thank you especially AnnMarie, for those delightful lines.

Thank you, Hans and Cheryl. It's always good to be back where you two both reside in part.

It's good enough with one or the other of you, but both, well, I hope everyone here is aware of how lucky and fortunate they are to know two extremely wonderful people at the same time. (It is so rare just to meet one at a time, that two is a special beneficience, no?)

I hope that everyone has been well, and fortunate, in your lives.

Hark! I hear the strains of a Strauss waltz. May I have this next dance, Mlle Cheryl?

It's about time that I wrote up my travels.

The first part of the trip was by coach to Casino (real place). I spent the time reading Axel Clark's biography of Christopher Brennan. Thereafter, it was train from Sydney to Casino, on which I ate copious quantitites of food, drank lots of liquid (including over a litre of a not too shabby white wine) and read the prose of Chris: Brennan. I got into Sydney, thence my sister's place, after 10:30 pm, where her boyfriend led me to her place.

On the next day, I went into town, dropped by Fisher Library at the University of Sydney, dropped by my other sister at her workplace (a bakery), bought some 2nd-hand poetry books, and made my way into the State Library. The next day, and Monday to Wednesday, I spent at the State Library, pausing only to buy a third poetry book, and a pin of Trim (Matthew Flinders' cat, the first cat to circumnavigate Australia) for my sister.

On that Saturday, I went food shopping with my sister, and we spent the Sunday with my niece, her daughter, having an early Christmas.

Thursday, Friday (after the library) and the following Monday to Wednesday was spent reading and napping and writing reviews. The second weekend, I went down to Wollongong, where I met up with friends, stayed at my mother's best friend's place on the Saturday night.

As for nights, apart from Mondays, I spent the time hanging with my sis, watching the telly, and reading. The first Monday, I visited my friend Danny, where I had dinner, and looked at his library. The second Monday, I visited the grave of Brennan, read some poetry, had dinner with Danny, looked at some more books, and returned to my sister's place.

The final Thursday, I read all the way back, though ate, and drank, far less. I got back about 9:30 pm, and jumped online to winnow away all the emails I didn't want to read, before crashing for the night.

At the library, I essentially worked on my Brennan bibliography, though I did make side excursions, such as hunting up Australian poets' addresses, reading chapters on poetry, making notes for a new collection of poems, etc.

Ghyle, my sweet little blue furry friend, sounds like you had a wonderful trip. And was able to catch up with so many of your family and friends. It must be nice to have so much family. Our family is so small we can all get in one closet and still be able to turn around in it, and I do mean small closet.

One brother and two sisters isn't exactly large; just over the national average.

Plus a number of my aunts and uncles have had no issue, nor has one of my sisters; I have two nieces and one nephew, and only have regular contact with one of them, Caitlin, my sister's daughter.

The main problem is that the oldest two are insanely jealous of my sister and myself, and can't stand my mother, after my parents divorced (I was a kiddliwink then, and knee-high to a grasshopper.

But that's all a waste of time: what matters is that one loves and cares for one's family, here, now, and in the future. Life's too short for feuds and grudges, I say.

Here, Here, my little blue furry friend. Family no matter the size is what counts. I have Martin, my own, and one daughter, two grand-daughters. Both of my parents are gone, and my two brothers live so far away as to never see them. But I do love them and they do call now and again. But that's it. Oh and lets not forget my little buddy...Teddy my cat(who thinks he is a dog, go figure only for me). See I told you a small closet. And since the girls are in North Carolina now, we have tons of room in that closet. WOE is me I hate space!

Space is useful (thinks: all the poetry books I could stash away!).

More bookshelves would also come in handy too. I only have two for my poetry, and I am dreadfully overflowing there as it is by just under 175 titles. (Not counting the ones elsewhere, or being read at the mo.)

I ring one sister and my niece every week, most times, and I see my mum most days--mum's around the corner from me, less than 5 minutes away, so we're both happy at the mo.

Which reminds me: I should email my dad, let him know I'm back home.

Ghyle, I thought that you didn't see your father? Or do you just call because he is far away? I also need more space who doesn't. I was just meaning my family is so small as to fit in one, with space to spare. I have a studio that is crammed with art equipment and easels, paint, brushes, pencils and all the rest of what it takes to try to make a masterpiece. We have a large collection of movies, british mysteries are now being collected. We have our two computers set up side by side with all of the space that it takes for them. I hope that I don't learn another hobby that takes more room from my house. Soon we will have to move out to make room for the stuff, we have collected. That is a great idea for a thread!

There was a while when I didn't see my dad, but he's down in Victoria while I'm up near Queensland. To give you an idea, look at a map of Oz, which shows Melbourne. He's off to the right, and just south of there; I'm in the top right-hand corner of NSW, so that's several thousand ks at least between us.

Check it out http://home.pacbell.net/jgelb/--I'm near Brisbane, about an hour or two away, btw.
