Default What color is radiant fluid??

In re-reading the Crystal Singer books I noticed that Anne never states what color radiant fluid is.... I found that interesting because in my mind I've always imagined it as being a golden yellow color.
What color did you imagine radiant fluid to be?

I guess it could be clear... or maybe blue??
What are your thoughts??

I agree with the green, like the glow in the dark green, but slightly more bright in tint. Didn't Lars turn a green tinge from being in it so long?

I think I see it as pink too, but not dark/opaque pink. Rather a semi-translucent fluid (that would seem clear if you had a very thin smear of it) that looks pale pink and is shimmery with miniscule sparkles throughout it.

Pam: I just finished re-reading all 3 Crystal Singer books and I agree... she did not assign a color to it. I wonder what color Anne imagined it to be when she was writing about it.

it's a radioactive substance...so I always think "nuclear waste"...which is stereotyped to be a glowing, green liquid. So I always figured it to be a glowing, green liquid.

It glows, thus is radioactive. "Radioactive" doesn't mean it is dangerous...it means it radiates some form of energy.

Ummm. No. Your use of "radioactive", plus the fact you assumed it was green plus the fact you posted a pic of Montgomery Burns kind of implies that you are meaning/inferring nuclear waste. Which is not something particularly nice to bathe in - especially not for the lengths of time Singers are known to stay in a tub.

Whilst one definition of "radioactive" could be something which emits radiant energy, and light is, in some respects, just such a radiant energy, I cannot recall a mention of radiant fluid glowing or in any way producing it's own light, either through some kind of unstable nucleus degrading and disintegrating (also wouldn't this put a finite limit on how long you could stay in it? I know Killa mentions that radiant fluid loses it's effects after so many exposures to crystal resonance, but I doubt this is due to a half-life issue and is more to do with the fact that hte fluid becomes saturated with ..... whatever crystal resonance actually is) or through any other of the known (and I leave myself open to a flame with the use of that word!) other bio- or chemoluminescence.

If anybody can provide a quote of the radiant fluid glowing then I will, of course, offer a large and public apology!

It's strange though as it is described as being thick and viscous (I believe), but that when you emerge from the tub it sheets off the body leaving no (or little) residue. Presumably whatever the base is, it isn't water- or oil-based.

I think I might make a poll. Is that ok?

huh? Burns was pic'ed because he's commonly associated with the classic stereotype of what people think of when they think "radioactive material".

Radioactive material is any substance that emits energy. Radiant fluid, iirc, glows. If it's glowing, then it's emitting energy.

Well we could sit here and argue ourselves around and around in circles, but it's not going to get us anywhere unless somebody with a book at hand can find a "radiant fluid glows" type of quote.

And then we can discuss radioactivity and glowing and things

does that mean my heater is radioactive because it radiates heat?

radiation is defined as the process of emitting energy in the form of waves or particles, and believe me, when you get down to the Quantum level waves and partiles become extremely odd.

Radioactivity is a specific form of radiation to do with the decay of certain elements. There are three main types of radioactive decay:
alpha decay- when a helium nucleus is emitted, a nucleus is, classically, the middle of the atom and consists of protons and electrons
Beta decay- an electron is emitted (those are the little things that fly around the nucleus- they're more complicated, but I'm keeping it simple here)
Gamma radiation- photons, which are em waves- light visible light etc

You can walk into a reactor- I'm not!

Now I'm only an Mphys Physics student hoping to do a phd sometime but I presume that I am ualified enough to explain what radiation and radioactivity- I mean I've only been studying them since I was 14/15

Light is a form of radiant energy that travels in "waves". Anything that produces light is producing radiant energy.

If it's emitting radiation, wouldn't that make it radioactive? It's always been an assumption of mine.

no, radioactivity in physics is the specific example I mentioned above.

Photons may be emitted in a wide variety of ways, for example in a colision between a particle and an antiparticle or emitted when an electron moves down an energy level (ie in an LED). It's a way to get rid of excess energy

Ok, so now that has been dealt with (and thanks to Edith and her physics! ), could we get back to the subject at hand? Is there, in fact, a quote from one of the books that supports this "glowing radiant fluid" idea that sparked the radioactive/radiation/radiant thing?

Presumably it could be in the name: "radiant" meaning to give off heat or light (or other electromagnetic radiation). Is it glowing or just nice and warm?

From what I could find, its referred to as "viscous" just about every time its mentioned, it oozes out of the taps, the body is buoyant in it, and it sleets off of bodies. Radiant could just be a name and have little to do with actual properties.

I've always imagined it as a greenish, viscous fluid, greenish and opaque enough that people submerged in it don't need anything to cover their modesty.

Very good point, I may have to rethink my first impression of it.

Oops! Missed this thread when I was doing my posting. So here's the same thing I posted in the other Radiant Fluid threads......

I emailed Anne asking her what color the fluid was to her. Yes, I did say that my favorite was a golden color. But here's HER reply......

"Some sort of a vivid sea green, like apple green or the green of cat eyes. I don't think I ever specified now that you mention it."

There's your answer!!!
