Default Space Ship Detection

Just wondering....would the Yoko have detected the approach of space craft in its vicinity? Just wondering if it would have detected the Erika when it landed on Pern to answer the beacon that Tubberman launched with Kimmer's help? If so, wouldn't AVIAS have known about it when he reconnected with the Yoko in updating files and had let the 9th pass people know about that history? Did the early Pernesse use AVIAS when they build landing...I remember that they set it up but what was its original purpose?

And AVIAS would have gone into power saving mode, by then none of the folks have been back to check, or on his list. In CoPB - "The Dolphin's Bell, Paul Benden said Ezra Keroon would want to check on AVIAS building, after the

Sean and Carenath made one trip to Landing to check on the building that AVIAS was housed, sothing Ezra Keroon CoP - The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall
CoP:FRH - "The Ford of Red Hanrahan" and he report more fullly to Pull Bendend that the ash covered most of Landing, no others out side of the homer which actvated when the shuttle landed, they pick up the homer that CoP - The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall
CoP:- "CoP:RR - "Rescue Run" Steve Kimmer put up.

Perhaps it was one of the things AIVAS neglected to tell the characters for whatever reason - I seem to recall he does this a few times, such as when several people travel to the Yokohama to dissect Thread, only for him to suggest after the trip that they could have brought a diamond cutter with them.

Since Pern was intended to be isolated away from the F.S.S, AIVAS might have received the message, and then filed it away since it wasn't something the settlers would have wanted to know, plus the current Pernese inhabitants wouldn't need it to stop Thread.

It may also be as Ginny said. By that stage AVIAS may have been in Power Saving Mode/Shutdown by that time and unable to receive any data such as that.

I would surmise that such data would have been held in the Yoko's memory banks as short term data and may have been wiped by the time AVIAS was able to temporarily come back online with exposure of the solar panels.

Or after 2500 years with no repeat visits, AIVAS decided the modern Pernese didn't need to know about it.

The settlers would have switched off most of the starships' functions at some point after they moved north. If Landing hadn't been buried so deeply, they might have gone back and switched a few programs onagain, but they never got the chance. Yokohama and the other 2 ships were probably left performing certain essential tasks, like making course-corrections to prevent them from succumbing to Pern's gravity or drifting out of alignment with AIVAS, and deflecting hull-piercing meteorites, but not collecting data about everything that was going on in space around them.

The crew of the Amherst's gig (Rescue Run) only got the standard ID response from the Yokohama, and a blinking beacon started up at the landing-field tower as the gig came close. Kimmer had also set up a beacon at Honshu.

AIVAS' original purpose was to maintain communications with the 3 ships, which were in Pern-synchronous orbit over Landing. That was why they left it in place when they moved north. It was also the main data storage, but the settlers had plenty of portable units and terminals.

Yes, once they got the generators running end of Dragonsdawn, DD, DDawn and also part of CoP - The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall CoPB - "The Dolphin's Bell" they were programed to keep track of stuff, via a coding system, bar coding I think some were in both DE/RSR - Dragonseye/Red Star Rising, In storage, 'rolls of stout fishing line' unknown when make but able to take heavy weight' and RoP - Renegades of Pern, Colored nets, and storage boxes at Pardise River Stake/Hold,Jayge and Aramina, they used what they had to hand, and the caves around Landing too. The dolphins, in DoP - Dolphins of Pern, return the 'man things/storge boxes' to aid Readisof They found in RoP- Renegades of Pern, but didn't know what they had till AIVAS's ID them as 'standard computer terminals, parts in All the Weyrs of Pern, also Honshu, had the 'shuttle fuel in bags' with bar code markering' that safe, also plastic was found in many items. at myself for yarning along here.
