If you define "favorite authors" as "ones I'll snatch up any book by in a heartbeat" they are:
Terry Pratchett Robin Hobb John Scalzi Sergi Lukyanenko (Russian writer; his translated Night Watch books are awesome, as are the movies) Jim Butcher Jacqueline Carey Patrick Rothfuss Other authors I think are good, but conditionally and with caveats: Karen Chance - Funny urban fantasy with historical underpinnings. Can sometimes be TOO action oriented or silly, though. Anne Bishop - Dark gothy fantasy. Can be a little sappy, and a little...not quite "sexist", but...I think she treats complex issues a little too shallowly sometimes. Terry Goodkind - Only his first four books. The rest are basically anti-commie propaganda (he really hates the evil commies) and as he got famous the editing of his works got worse, which exasperated the problem. Laurell K. Hamilton - First 8 or so Anita Blake novels are good. Then she switches her formula from "mystery plus a little sexual tension" to "porn with only the barest shred of plot". Note that I will unreservedly buy Jacqueline Carey novels, so unlike what Ms. Hamilton has claimed on her blog in the past, my dislike of the later novels has nothing to do with prudishness.

I noticed a couple of others mentioned Robin Hobb. So, when you started reading her work, what did you start with, and were you aware that "Robin" is a woman?
I happened across the first books of the Farseer Trilogy, read them in order and wasn't aware that I was reading another female author for quite a while! I've gone through those, as well as the Tawny Man Trilogy and the Rain Wilds Chronicles except for Blood of Dragons. I have the Liveship Traders Trilogy and the Soldier Son Trilogy; I'm reading Shaman's Crossing.

They don't have to be SF writers. I'm sure we've got favourites who write other topics
I'll always pick something by: Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody series Ellis Peters Brother Cadfael series Anne Perry (for a start)

A few years ago We went to Walnut Grove and got to see where a couple of the books took place.

Lately I've been reading Michael Jecks's Knight Templar/Sir Baldwin de Furnshill mysteries. I need to get on Amazon, though, as Mom's got kind of a hit or miss collection of them and they're really hard to come by over here. Also Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma mysteries (set in seventh-century Ireland.) I don't really have favorite authors, I think, I just keep reading whatever grabs my interest. Nothing much in SF/F lately, though I did enjoy the Hunger Games trilogy.

I love the Little House series. (The books. If Michael Landon were alive I'd kick him in the shins for that abysmally stupid TV show.) I wish I could remember the name of the author-I'm not sure how easy it is to find, as I got the book used, but I have a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder called "Laura" that I've got at my parents' house that's very interesting. I keep meaning to get more of her daughter Rose Wilder Lane's writings--I didn't know until recently Rose is considered one of the three founding women philosophers of the modern libertarian movement!

My other reading seems to be mostly older mystery series: Dick Francis Ngaio Marsh Dorothy L Sayeers Alexander McCall Smith (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and 44 Scotland Street series in particular) Lillian Jackson Braun (The Cat Who ...) Jane Langton (Homer Kelly) That's who are in my Kindle Cloud Drive. |
