Default Hans' latest acquisitions

I've been quiet for a while and, not to boast about this, but my English langage Pern book collection is virtually complete, so it is definitely hard to find something I still want or need.

One of the last few books I need for my collection came into my possession the other week: the Rapp & Whiting 1st UK hardcover edition of Dragonflight. Normally these books go for a couple of hundred dollars which I (still) find too expensive. Recently however I saw a copy without a dustjacket for a reasonable price and dediced to buy it, that way I aready have the book (for research purposes if any) and if I can obtain a high resolution scan of the cover I'll make a (mock) dustjacket myself (Are you bringing your copy with you to Holland, Edith? )

Here is the book, it is in a very good condition with only a light discolouration of the cover. It s a true 1st and not an ex-library and the interior is in perfect condition.

and the copyright page

Some of you know I recently put a bid on the first three volumes of the Dragonriders series in Hebrew. That is, the newer paperback series. I won the bid and last week received the books; from right to left (as they also need to be read, so the spines will be on "the wrong side" for most of us): Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon.

Flight and Quest have the "old" UK Steve Weston cover art but White Dragon has the latest UK Les Edwards cover art.

I also collect all possible book and magazine editions of the Pern short stories. A few years ago I found and bought the anthology Eispiloten (a translation of the English anthology Nebula Award Stories 3 with Roger Zelazny as editor). It holds Weyr Search in German, the first publication of that story in that language. It was a hardcover by Rencontre Editions, based in the Swiss Lausanne. I knew there should also be a paperback edition by Lichtenberg Verlag and three weeks ago someone on German eBay offered one for a dollar and a half Needless to say I grabbed my chance:

This paperback brings my Weyr Search short story subcollection to 23 copies. And funnily enough the only two hard-to-find copies I still need are the Doubleday hardcover (1968) and the Victor Gollancx hardcover (1968) of which the book above is the translation!

Hans...Congratulations...this is a fantastic find and it looks in lovely shape as well. Good Luck, on finding the last two books for your *Weyr Search* collection.
Interesting that the Hebrew, books also are read for us back to front...kind of like being Left-Handed, in a Right-Handed world...!!!

Actually the Hebrew books aren't the only ones that come out that way. Anyone notice that Japanese Anime books are done the same way???? I've come across a few of these along the way in Melbourne but not actually picked them and brought them so to speak though! Question for you Hans....Are there any books by Anne McCaffrey in the Asian market??? It's something I haven't looked into myself but you being the connesieur.......in all things Pern related etc...

Yes, Jube, most of Anne's books are translated into Japanese.

Other Asian books are Thai, although the first volume (there is a topic on this book since I have a Thai friend who bought me a few copies) indicates there are more my contact has never been able to find them and got "not published" as answer in bookshops, even after computer database search.
There have been illegal Thai publications, one of which I saw and handled at Anne's (Dragondrums), which indicates that at least Dragonsong and Dragonsinger will have been available that way.

There are also persistent rumours about illegal Chinese translations but I have never seen one.

I don't know of any other Asian countries that have AMC translations and do not consider the Russian and Middle Eastern languages as such.

Jube...OOOooooOOOO Yes,now that you say that I remember seeing it. I have bought several of the Japanese Anime books for my Grand-daughters...and I was indeed very suprised at the time,to see that they are read/viewed, from back to front....

P.S. Thanks for the memory jog

That's what you get for living in Japan for 2 years as a kid growing up in the 70's with a father who worked on the Australian Tourism Board. Why do you think Australia is "SO OUT THERE" with the Asians and Americans? Courtesy of people like my dad! Actually I'd forgotten all about it myself, until I went to the library near where my mum lives in Melbourne and there's a lot of Asians who live in this area. So hence the statement about being back to front on Japanese Manga books. Kinda wished I'd brought them too - although I've forgotten much of the Japanese written format. Oh well, whatever....
