Hey, I was just wondering what everyones favorite character from the 9th pass was. I personally like Menolly the best, but Masterharper Robinton was way up there with Lessa and F'lar. So who;s your favorite or most loved character?

Menolly. Most of the others have character traits that would drive me insane in a short while.

NOBODY LIKED LESSA?
![]() Anyway, enough of that. . . I found it very hard to decide; I had a 4-way tie there for a while. Sharra because she always reminds me of my best friend, she's a strong woman, and she sounds like someone I'd like to get to know. F'lar because, well gee I wonder why, maybe because he's hot ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I finally decided on Oldive, because he is one of the few people on Pern with a noticeable physical disability, and he is not only in a powerful position, he is much needed and asked for. As "primitive" as the society on Pern may be, Masterhealer Oldive's disability is NOT the first thing people think of when they find they have need of him. His skills and abilities matter so much more- I just think that's the way the wortd should be! ![]() |

Since this isn't a multiple-option poll, we couldn't show EVERY character that we like. Just the one single person that we like the VERY BEST.

Menolly was my favorite from the first time I saw her in TWD was her first appearance I think. The way she teased Jaxom reminded me so much of my family, and the way she always seemed to know what he was thinking.
Then once I read the harper trilogy I just fell for her even more... Jaxom is second because of his character as a person and his relationship with Ruth. The next 3 are tied as I can't choose F'Lar, Lessa, and Robinton. I adored Lessa and F'Lar's relationship with each other and their dragons. Robinton I liked for his intellect about people in general. Next it is a toss up over Sebell and Sharra: Sebell was a riot in the Harper trilogy (when Menolly first played for Dominic (spellling) with Sebell and the other journeyman who's name escapes me right now), and his involvement in the other later novels. Sharra I enjoyed seeing her relationship with Jaxom grow and the way she handles Jaxom in the later books is similar to F'lar and Lessa's Out of the list my least favorite was Mirrim. Her behavior in Harper Trilogy was completely different in the rest of the books. |

![]() I loved the way he was so nice to Menolly when she was at Benden Weyr after her escape from thread, and how kind he was on their return to "her" cave to collect her stuff ![]() Then it can't have been easy for him being "life-bonded" (yes, I know that's not a Pernese concept, but it seems a good description of the relationship ![]() ![]() |

Okay, I had to go with Robinton. He is just such a good all around guy. He has had his hardships, too, and still comes out with a good look on life.

YES. I love that smart arse. (The literal mockery of his rider in Dragonflight comes to mind with his "HAHA! JEALOUS OVER THAT!? That's SAD F'lar" implications).

![]() Quote:
Consider the way F'nor was socialized growing up. Prior to Lessa-Impressing-Ramoth-and-actually-wanting-to-be-a-real-dragonrider, dragonriding had to be one of the most male-dominated professions ever, an exclusive boy's club in the sky! Then there's the society that he grew up in; it's not primitive, it's just different. Riders of bronze and brown dragons are given more privledges (usually), and more of a leadership role- rank's a big deal on Pern, and weyrs are decidedly not democratic. So, somewhere in F'nor childhood, it was doubtless implied to him that because of Canth's color, he had status on Pern. And he grew up with that part of his personality. Then there's Brekke. Besides being a tad withdrawn and suffering from a serious lack of confidence, she's generally a cool person; I like her! And she can talk to and hear all the dragons, which is awesome ability to have. Consider this: she had the power to call in several weyrs' worth of help during that. . . scene, and she didn't for some unexplained reason. Probably because she liked F'nor, but she hadn't thought of things going that far, but when they did she was at first VERY surprised (I would be), but then kind of liked the whole thing. Really, she could have had Wirenth knock him out or something worse, but she didn't. If I was in that situation where I felt a guy was taking advantage of me and I had what Brekke's got, I'd use it. Then again, if said guy was a good friend and respected me enough to try to help me even if he's blundering around and totally doing it the wrong way, I might reconsider, he was gentle with her, she can be gentle with him. Being raped is not "help", that much I know! But in a society where people that are partnered with dragons are expected to put the animal's needs above their own, doing something that seems scary with a nice guy like F'nor(someone she felt fairly comfortable with), might be. Different society, different people, and I respect the differences! By the modern Earth definition of rape, yes F'nor raped Brekke! But they don't live on Earth, so the same things don't apply. He knew about her ability to hear all the dragons, and he knew- F'nor's not stupid- that she could call in her own dragon plus anyone else she wanted to help her fend him off, and he took the risk and did what he did anyway. Just like F'lar took the risk to bring a strong-willed drudge to the Weyr to Impress Pern's only queen dragon. I know that doesn't excuse what F'nor did, but hopefully it does explain it a little. Just because F'nor did something that may be considered wrong by the standards of another planet, is absolutely no reason to torture him, or castrate him, or anything else. If so, Brekke probably would have done it already!! OK, so that's that- you asked! My opinion is my opinion, and while you certainly don't have to agree with it, I'd appreciate it you'd respect me enough to listen to it. P.S. Hey Dragongirl, I like F'lar, too, very pretty eyes! Also, in many of the audio versions of the books, both he and Mnementh have this really neat British-sounding accent, that just sounds very classy and very. . . F'lar. |

That's okay! Discussions can go all over the place... but that's such a hot topic, that had already been discussed to such extent, and it's one that could really derail the original discussion!
