Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows *Spoilers*

This thread is to discuss book 7 of the Harry Potter series. There will be spoilers, no doubt, so don't read on if you don't want your reading enjoyment spoiled.



















Now, that's over.

Took me 5 and a half hours to read, with a lunch break. How about you?

What did you think of it? I thought

My sister is reading it to Kibbie today & tomarrow. Then I get it. I do know who dies tho. Yes I am the type of person that will read the end of a book first. HEEE

I'm not. I've read it and quite enjoyed it. ~Took me longer than 5.5 hours, but I did enjoy it. Mind you, she rushed the epilogue something awful.

I've not read it and don't plan on buying the book. I'll read it if someone lends it to me or buys it me...but I'm not wast-- eh...spending £18 or so on an 'easy reading' book.

It was worth the $30 it cost me, and I shall be rereading it after my mum's finished with it. I shall probably reread all 7 in a go, then.

I feel really unsatisfied. Don't quite know why. I will say, even if they may have been "necessary," there was just too much death of characters I really liked. I'm really happy that Kreacher came around though

Eh, she only killed second string characters (excepting Dumbledore, but that was last book and kinda obvious so his protoge could prove himself on his own).

It was entertaining but not OMG-Fabutastic.

I've read a snark-laden review that hit the mark well on flaws and high points.

I liked Dobby. I have a friend that was uset because they killed Hedgwig. I am only about 1/2 way threw because my sitster keeps taking it back. She & Kibbie are reading it aloud. Beside she said that since she paid fot the book it is her. So far I like it. I was up until about 3:00 A.M. reading it. No wonder I have a headache today. LOL. I guess I deseve it.

3 hours. I've worked out my nain niggle with her stuff- strong plots. It was ok when it was set in the school as there were certain definite points to hang things off- birthday, start of term, christmas, easter, summer but without those it was easy to get lost time-wise. In addition she can't write deaths at all!

Oh, I liked Dobby too, and Kreacher. But it's hard to get worked up over his death.

It took me about 8 hours to read it... of course that was with breaks for meals.

I WAS upset with the loss of Hedwidge and Dobby...and I almost flipped when she killed Fred! Why not Percy? Darn git may have smartened up, but still.... far less likable than the twins. I was also not happy about losing both Tonks and Lupin...although Lupin's death didn't really surprise me. Nor did Snape's, although his parting gift to Harry did. I am surprised Narcissa didn't bolt sooner, taking Draco with him....but even after the final curtain...looks like that snob attitude stays in the Malfoy line!

I think everyone who dies is dead-dead, not TV-sweeps dead, just dead.

Finished it yesterday, still rereading bits and pieces. Overall, I'm quite pleased. Especially with how the epilogue turned out (you can't tell me JKR doesn't look at fan fic. She set up fan fic with that ending, and not just the delusional nut jobs who think Harry/Hermione still works. I mean the upcoming Rose Weasley/Scorpius Malfoy FORBIDDEN LOVE fics.)

GODS Anareth, I didn't think about THAT..... of course, there are also the questions about Teddy and HIS girl (Bill and FLuer's daughter?) And is there a MRS> Proffessor Longbottom? And how the hell is Malfoy dealing with the fact Harry and Ron saved his life 3 times in ONE day?

yeah, I thought Victoire is Fluer's daughter. And poor Dobby. It was so sad, though i always knew and regretted that it would happen. And wasnt it sorta a shock how characters dispplayed their true form, but afterwards you were like yeah that was possible. And Hedwig had to be killed off both to start the whole greif thing and because if he was on the lamb she would have given away his position.

I finely fished it at 2 a.m. this morn. can you imagian what holiday family together would be like if Rose weasley marrie Scorpus Malfroy. LOL. It would Herminie, Geny & Draco wife to keep the boys from killing each other. LOL.
I do think that there is room for anther book. Even tho. Valdermort died eventualy some one will take his place. Evil is never truely defeated. There will always be Battles between good & evil.
Over all I liked the book!

Took me 8 hours to read from cover to cover (with breaks for tea, food and body functions).

I thought it was much better written then the last book, and flowed better as a story.

Enjoyed it, but I'll see how I feel after I have slept on it

And the epilogue... gah. She could have put some more time into it or just left it out altogether, IMO.

I wish had said more about some of the 2nd string charators in the epilogue.
Did Georage keep the joke shop open. Did mcgonagal become head mistress of Hogwarts. BTW what jobs did Harry,Ron ,Ginny & Hermine end up with. I wish the epilogue was longer. I did like how she said who married who.

apparently, Rowling is going to be writing an encyclopedia of the characters, and it will have more details on the fates of chracters (among other things).

I have to say, when reading the 6th, my bro and I thought Harry should die not Dumbledore. It was great until after Harry dies. Then Harry woke up...
I was dreading the words and it was all a dream following that sentance which thankfully didn't happen. I admit i was a little snivelly but not for any main character. snape's story was quite sad.

But on a brighter note, i bought the book for £5. £10 in TESCO, £5 if you spent £50 or more, we went on a food shop

It does give her a whole new load of characters to write about 10 years down the line though if she wants! which actually might be quite fun.

This is a picture of Kibbie dressed as a wizard thrying to dress as a muggle. I put the same picture in the Kibbie thread in the library. At a H.P party at Barns & Nobal. She made the front page of the local paper for this costume. The picture is a scaned polaroid so it is not the best.

I think I'll go with Hans on this one, though I probably won't see the movie. I did buy it for my daughter to read, and before she got home from work I read the last 2 chapters or so to see who died in the end.

yes, you can't read it well knowing what happens in the end. It makes it boring because in the bits of suspense you know what happens so it doesn't have the same effect

With all the fuss about a major character dying, I was a little annoyed when I kept bracing myself for Ron or Hermione to die any paragraph, and then they didn't! The only deaths we really feel are Fred's, of course, and Dobby. Yes, Dobby was annoying, but he saved everyone.

She did kill Harry, but then he wasn't really dead, so it doesn't count.

I LOVED that Kreacher responded to kind treatment, just like Hermione always said he would, and ended up LEADING the other house-elves into battle! Which was also foreshadowed at some point!

And what a thrill when everyone started pouring into the Room of Requirement - the DA and everyone from the Order - and I suddenly realized, of COURSE the final battle is going to be in Hogwarts! There's no other place it could be!

I am so glad we saw Snape's own memories of what has been going on with him throughout the series. And what a revelation about him and Lily! It wasn't just a crush, it was a childhood friendship - a strange one, but probably his only one... And now we know how Petunia knew about dementors... and how she really felt about Hogwarts...

I was very pleased with Dudley's farewell to Harry.

I was furious when I turned the page and saw the phrase "Nineteen Years Later..."

Yes, very cheesy... although it does stop people from betting who marrys who. I'm really curious to know what jobs they have considering all the excitement is over..?

I agree Brenda that the fuss about the death of "major" character(s) was highly over-rated. Fred's was the most important death, and he has an identical twin so it's like she only half-killed him (and yes, it is very sad for George to lose his twin, but we readers have to mourn Fred on our own as she didn't write hardly two words of sadness into the book about it).

Yeah, that LJ was shut down, not for the Potter review but for artwork the user had done that received legal complaints (they were parodies of old comic books, should be legal under fair use laws, but LJ doesn't like taking risks and shuts down upon complaints regardless of outcome, it seems).

Short version: Hermione is "high up" in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Ron and Harry are both Aurors, doesn't mention what Ginny does (but there's apparently more to the interview.) McGonnagal is no longer headmistress as she was "getting up there", and someone new is. Neville is unmarried, and while she had originally said that there would be no Neville/Luna, she has softened a bit and now says that's open-ended. Luna is traveling the world in search of the unusual, though she no longer takes everything her father believes at face value.

The person who survived the series who wasn't going to was Arthur Weasley (who was meant to die in book five.) The two who died who weren't supposed to were Lupin and Tonks. Victoire is Bill and Fleur's oldest child.

I ended up with the impression from Rowling's interview that Ginny may just be staying home to raise the kids, but I wouldn't swear to that being correct.

All her deaths are very odd and numb. Which is odd considering that she talks about the death of her mother being an important influence. There's no distress there, no real grief. The closest you get to that is with Snape's memories and its more the memories and the sacrifice than the death itself.
