Pern movie deal with Copperheart Entertainment

It's been officially announced, finally! As lucky host Anneli learned when she went to Anne's 80th birthday party, there is a new movie deal between Anne and Copperheart Entertainment to produce a Pern movie. It seems the whole series has been optioned (which I think would be typical), so we may get multiple movies if the first one does well.

Of course we're not gonna hold our breath given how many times Pern has come close to the large and small screen before, but this is a very promising development. And now you know why that Pern concept art was probably produced...

Here's the SciFi Wire article

And it looks like its the sort of company that might turn up at the Arts Centre cinema!
Great!
Lets hope it doesn't change major elements, or, if its a clonglomerate of stories it's done like Master and Commander.

Ah!

And as all of the concept art was Dragonflight (yes, I know some of you thought Path and Mirrim were there, but I think that was just Ramoth looking greenish in some dodgy lighting), I think we know where they'll start.

Let's hope they don't ressurect the silly notion of Lessa being passed the "ruby ring of time [travel]" by her mother on her death bed. That sank an early movie deal several decades ago.

Read the post in the Announcements too, and also got the extra bit on why the TV show that came oh so close was pulled. I didn't know that the producer(?) was backing up Anne (and the fans too in a way) by sticking to his guns on certain points. Good for him! Let's hope these folks understand and not want to make huge changes too. As AnnMarie said, Guardedly enthusiastic here too.

Pern the Movie.......

I just got this in E-mail... I'm sure you all have heard about it but it was new to me..... I'm very excited and PRAY it all works out this time..

From Sci-fi.com
http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index...ory=0&id=36303

Pern Heads To Big Screen

Anne McCaffrey's best-selling and long-running SF book series The Dragonriders of Pern will be adapted for the big screen by Canadian production company Copperheart Entertainment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Copperheart, which was behind the 2005 Oscar-winning animated short Ryan, has optioned the 19-book series, which began with Dragonflight in 1968. The books are best known for having humans ride dragons with which they telepathically bond. With Dragonflight, McCaffrey became the first woman ever to win a Hugo Award for fiction, and she is one of the 2006 inductees into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

Copperheart, run by Steve Hoban, also has produced the Imax 3-D movie Cyberworld.

Pern nearly came to TV in a 2001 series for The WB from Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore, but the network pulled the plug on the pilot after Moore refused to make changes to the Pern mythos that he thought would harm its integrity

Looks like we'll be speculating and drooling for awhile though, as it seems this is only in the pre-production stages, it likely won't be for a couple years until we see it on screen We may be lucky and get some minor glimpses on set and some production photos within a year though

Why do they need a cast list? I would have thought that somebody like Pixar could do a sooooper animated version.

I do think that this would have been great as an computer generated flim. They can do such wonderful things with that these days. I just hope that it is done as Anne wrote it, and not played with, by someone else.

Tony, they produced more films (one Oscar winner among them) with a few more coming out soon...

Ginger Snaps (2000)
Nothing (2003)
Alter Ego's (2004) -- the question is... does Jayson know?
Ryan (2004)
Ginger Snaps, the beginning (2004)
Ginger Snaps, unleashed (2004)
Paradise (coming soon)
Skylight (soming soon)
Black Christmas (due out this year)

Seems it's a rather young company which built a reputation in a short time. Not the worst kind of company. But we'll have to wait... as always

Trilogy? Heck no, they took all 19, we can get many more than just 3 movies from all those books!
I want as many as possible and we all know that Anne will stick to her vision of Pern and it's dragons. If they don't follow then she won't let them do it. Pern, as always, will be Anne's Pern or none at all.

Well the way I was told, they got the rights for all 19 books, but I highly doubt they'll use all of them, that's very wishful thinking indeed! I don't think any series in movie history has made anywhere near that many They'll probably just use parts from different books that happen around the same time into the movie, making separate ones would get redundant. I think the highest we could practically hope for is 6 films, given that the first few are successful enough to allow it.

As for Copperheart's competancy, I think it's rather close-minded to judge them based soley on what they have done so far. Every company has to start somewhere, and their future potential is not definied by their previous films

as long as she, or someone who respects her wishes does it, look at Douglas Adams' stuff. There were 2 things done after his death, parts 3, 4 and 5 were done on radio very faithfully to the books apart from the happy ending at the end of part 5, since Douglas Adams said that he was unhappy about it and was contemplating another book.
Then there was the movie... which is quite good up to a point, then... well, the least said about that the better! Its barely the same universe let alone the same book!

All I'm worried about, and I'm sure that this hasn't crossed the film company's mind is that it will take a long time to do and Anne is 80. If they are unhappy about some major point they could string it out until an appropriate moment and then alter it!

AMAZING NEWS.

I had to admit, I was waiting to see if this was a late Aprils Fool...

Anne has stated in interviews in the past that she has pulled the plug on big screen productions of Pern becasue they moved away from her vision. I'm crossing my fingers, and I really hope this comes off, but I worry that on some level something will be changed that Anne wont like, and then no films will get made. Lets hope this company get's it.

On the other hand... I plan on raising my glass tonight in toast of this, becasue like everyone else I really do hope this comes off, and I will be there opening day, in the company of how many people from MOM? That's something to arange... but what a lovely thing to start thinking about...

FINALLY I get to put something new in the TV/Film section of Rukbat3!!!!

Syvrena - welcome to MoM!

We definitely need some local gathers to watch the premier together. Read is a solitary activity, so we don't often have the excuse to gather and enjoy Pern together!

How many movies the do will depend on the success of the first one -- if it's not a raging success there's not likely to be any follow-ons. If it is, I would agree with Spiff that there won't be a movie per book -- firstly with the way the books overlap in time I suspect some would be combined, and secondly the movie-going public is not likely to stay interested in this series for too many movies (unlike we fans who clearly would love to have 20 movies!). So they'd need to do some picking and choosing of which books/plots will translate well.

Ignoring the question of audience interest, I do think that they can get more than 6 movies out of the books, as there's at least 6 in the 9th Pass, plus you can do Pern: The Beginning and Pern: The Great Plague.
