Gold Harper Hall

My name is Jennifer and mawofone is my mother. She is letting me post this under her name for now. I have been reading the Harper Hall Books and I think Menolly had a hard life but was real lucky to impress the fire lizards. I realy liked beauty she is my favorite.

Hi Jennifer!
Beauty is... a real beauty! (sorry couldn't admit that- and someone in the books says it anyway )

Menolly was definitely lucky! Though I wouldn't have liked trying to feed nine firelizards!

I guess to an extent, most lives were harder on Pern by comparison of living here...and although I'd love a Fire Lizard, I wouldn't want more than two, if that.

She was lucky though, but I think she deserved all the good things that happened to her. ^^

Jennifer, nice to meet you! (what a nice Mum you have!!)

I wouldn't like to think of feeding nine firelizards at all. Tho for Menolly they were a good thing. They certainly kept her busy (understatement!) but that also kept her mind off of being holdless and also made her use that hand.

I'd make more comments but don't want to spoil the rest, if you've not read them all.

Welcome to MoM, Jennifer!

The Harper Hall books were my introduction to Pern, too.

And, I agree. Menolly DID have a hard life in Half-Circle. Everytime I read that, I feel like doing...something nasty to Yanus and Mavi and that sister of hers.

Me too, mainly Mavi and Sella though. Yanus is to blame but mainly by turning his head away from the problem at the wrong moments, and by inaction, such as not sending for a harper when it was obvious that Petiron couldn't cope!

I don't think Yanus cared one way or the other about Menolly. He was to bussy runnin the hold and the other children, then again they may not have known what to do with Menolly she was not like the other kids.

Yanus is the one who forbade her to tune, and who beat her when he caught her doing it. Sella tattled about Menolly teaching someone to play drum; Mavi made Menolly stop teaching drum, because she didn't want her to be punished by Yanus. I blame Yanus more than anyone.

Edit: I also blame Petiron, for not doing enough to help Menolly get out of there, and for letting everyone think they were just humoring an old man by letting her play music. With as much respect as the people of Half-Circle had for harpers, he could have done much more than he did with that status.

I think Mavi truly believed that it was for her own good.

(I don't believe she deliberately let Menolly's hand heal wrong; in DSo Mavi believes that she won't have the use of that hand any more.)

Read "News from the Weyr" to see what I think of some of the people of Half-Circle.

Sella, she was truly evil. Yanus ran the hold, and to his mind how it is done is how it SHOULD be done. had the flexibility of diamond. anyone who didn't fit in his views of where they belonged, they needed to be fixed, by the person responsible. Menolly he saw as his problem. her teaching the children was approved because Petiron had passed, but he didn't approve changes.

Her having the firelizards was a double edged benefit. Hard work to find food, and keep them clean/oiled. but unlike the hold, the work she did for her friends was appreciated. benefit outweighing the work.

Menolly rocks. Always liked her. She was ill-served by her family, excepting Alemi, but she overcame it and went far. And had the grit to try and outrun Thread. Gotta love that. Actually the kind of woman I would find attractive and I've proven pretty picky in my life.

I like that the rift has always remained, however, between Menolly and her parents and she never returns to Half-Circle. That's realistic, as is her looking out for the one family member that was decent to her and setting Alemi up at Paradise River.

I do not think Sella was realy evil. I think she was just trying to look after herself. I think that she was selfish. She was older than Menolly, but they never gave an age. If she was jsut a turn or two older that would have put her at 16 or 17. Kids at that age tend to think of themselves first. I think that growing up in that hold anyone most anyone would have had to think of themselves first to servive. It could not have been easy on any of the kids. With mabe the exception being the oldest.

I recall a scene, somewhere in Dragonsong, where Sella relished the idea of telling Mavi that Menolly left the door open, and she was shirking responsibilities. most people frown on tattletales, especially when they are old enough to be married.

Most sibs tattle tell on one anthor. That still does not make her evil. Just selfish & not a nice person. I do not think she would do anything that would cause injury to Menolly. Get her into trouble yes.

considering Menolly's parents favored the lash, getting someone in trouble meant they got a beating. at least if the erring person was yanus/mavi's child.

I have just gotten a mental image of Sella being Searched for a gold egg.

And, it's not that unlikely. Since Lessa originally thought that Menolly would make a good rider, then the possibility could run in the family.

I don't recall Sella saying anybody would make a good dragonrider, or anybody thinking Sella could make a good dragonrider. Menolly was thought to belong in the Weyr, by Lessa and Manora, because she could impress, and raise, solo, 9 fire lizards.

I just finished my ...... can't remember how many times reading Dragonsinger, and did short re-read again after that of last 100 pages or so.

I can read that book over and over and over. I like her story so much that I can wisk away to PERN and get away from Earth for a few hours... Each time I get excited again all over.

One of my most shocking reads was Masterharper. I couldn't believe the life he went through which could be thought of as bad as Menolly's.
