Thanks for putting up the picture of Ryk Reaser and kitty Boo. I love to know/see that kind of thing.

Greetings Cisco. You look a bit like Midnight, and you need to find a more comfortable chair. I try to find one with at least two cushions and (if I'm lucky) a coat that someone has left on it. Prrrr.

Thanks, Hans. Ryk loved being the model for Becker and inspired me to put a cat in for him anyway. His first suggestion was a junkyard dog but after a little walk I returned and said, "I can't really write a dog. It'll have to be a junkyard cat." Hence, RK, modeled on Ryk's belligerant Boo cat.

Hi, Zorro,
Well, I posed during the summer time and so being cool was good and it's a baskety chair. Also, I wanted to be alert to keep an eye on my mom and make sure she didn't do anything wrong on the computer. Thanks for the tips though. Purrs, Cisco

That's one of the 2fers from the SONGS FROM THE SEASHELL ARCHIVES series--I think it's volume 1, which is SONG OF SORCERY and THE UNICORN CREED. Vol 2 has BRONWYN'S BANE and THE CHRISTENING QUEST in it. Cool!

Not sure on the title as Kath was waving it around that it didn't come out properly in the photo. All I know is that it was one of Eann's books, she found amongst 10 boxes that got filled up periodically over the weekend of Aussiecon 4. I found several books as well - 2 of which were signed and given to hubby's dad for father's day. Neither of us could think of anything for him and as I was going to Aussiecon, it was pretty safe to find a book by either Kim Stanley Robinson, Ian Irvine or Robert Silverberg, have it signed and viola, instant happy dad / dad-in-law. Apparently hubby was telling me that his dad had heaps of books in a freezer that got thrown out due to mildew etc and as I said to Flinx, "all those books - GONE". What can I say? The only times I've had to throw a book in the recycle bin is when it so badly damaged that it can't be fixed in anyway and it's pretty rare for me to do that.

There's one problem with e-books: how do you browse round somebody's e-books when you go round for a meal?

You all have such wonderful feline famliy members... I have an abundance right now as my 7 year old Siamese had 6 kittens on July 7th 2010. Cisco looks like my Bob, who is very friendly. Aimee is not as her name would suggest, friendly. I can only keep one of the kittens as the law states; I cannot have more than three. I have chosen a large, lengthy, short haired grey, whom I have named Socrates.

Where in Washington do you live that they won't let you keep your kittens? Nobody has that rule in Port Townsend! Or if they do they keep quiet about it. Of course, we're pretty rural.

We don't have any limits as such imposed by government, although many landlords insert them (or total bans) into tenancy agreements, but our news seems to have frequent items about little old ladies found with 37 cats all living in abject poverty.

Well, it all depends on the living conditions of the impoverished women and cats. Some take very good care of all of the cats, get together enough bucks for vet bills and food for the cats if not for themselves, prevent kittens (one woman I know who had 72 at one time kept girl kitties in one room and boy kitties in the other until she could get them spayed and neutered) and love and name every single one and keep the litter boxes clean and so forth. Others have dead cats in their house and don't even notice, or cats in very poor health or they don't have enough to feed them. I heard some animal control dude on TV say that he didn't see the difference between a cat rescuer and a cat hoarder--well, dipshite TV guy, there it is. Cat rescuers give the kitties a better life and cat hoarders basically give them a roof but very little else to sustain them.

I live in a lynnwood apartment. Our neighborhood has been over run with ferrals and my daughter works at PAWS. If I lived on my own property there would still be a limit over here, due to animal mills. I have found them all wonderful homes with the exception of Socrates, who is home.

That's great that you found them all homes. Do you have a feral cat society over there? We have one here that does a capture, spay neuter and release program on the ferals so there won't be more kittens.

Eann, they tried that spay/neuter and release program here. It might have worked better if people didn't continue to dump kittens in the wooded area near the grade school. Last winter was hard on them, and several froze/ starved to death. The eagle we have nesting near by has proven to be a better population control on them.

The feral cat society thing doesn't combat buttheads who dump poor little kittens into the wild to be eaten by eagles. It's for feral cat colonies who are perfectly happy to be feral and the community is happy enough for them to be feral as long as they're not breeding. So you're not dealing with the kittens from those cats as well as the abandoned ones. Just because heartless bozos dump kittens doesn't mean the other program doesn't have a lot of worth.

I recall watching a show on that, we adopted ours. I know we got to get them into the vet, but we are working on it. I don't know if have one, I don't thinks so, but then I haven't been as active around here as I like.

Good you found home for the kittens!

Believe it or not its NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration) that does our ferral cat project. For low income familys, pets can be spayed/netured for $15 each. Then its off to the pet mobil for immunization for $5. I think their realizing that without us poor folk taking in unwanted animals, PAWS could not keep up with their no kill policy.

That's a good insight on their part. And really, getting a pet sort of needs to cost SOMEthing so that people who might abuse it are weeded out to some degree.

Kind of reminds me of a something I was told by a missionary in Africa. They always charged (a small amount) for their medicines because the locals had the belief that something that cost nothing was worth nothing.

We have similar beliefs, if unstated, in the west. It has to hurt or taste bad and preferably cost a lot to be effective. Also, there are patients who feel they haven't been treated if many expensive tests aren't performed first.

I think it has worth, I just think it depends on the situation. Our problem got really bad: to the point the ferals were actually stalking the smaller DOGS in the neighborhood, and competing with local predators for food. And these animals were hunting in groups, more like lions than any other type of cat.
But you are right about bozos who don't care enough to spay/neuter their own cats being the largest part of the problem.

The feral cat society here also feeds the colonies so they're not starving and diseased (or hunting small dogs) Besides they'd have to compete with the coyotes, eagles and wolves who also prey on them.

No wolves or coyotes here... yet. Eagles, hawks, cormorants, fox....disease isn't always tied to starvation. All it would take to decimate a population of felines is one stray with feline lukiemia being released in their territory, no matter how well fed. Unlike the human forms of lukiemia, it is highly contagious and always fatal.

Which is why some families take in only feluke kitties or have places where they can live isolated from the rest of the population.

At least the lucky ones do, GinnyStar.
Hey, I have some Barque Cat news--my agent said the publisher let him know the Science Fiction Book Club has made an offer so that the book can be their featured holiday selection for Christmas. They are querying Annie's agent now but I expect she'll be pleased. I know I talked about the new covers but did I show them to you yet?

So here's the paperback cover for Catalyst

And here's the hardback cover for Catacombs. The silhouette is supposed to be of Pshaw-Ra and it does kinda look like the old scamp.
