Default Dragoncon 2011 Exciting News

I just recieved Todd's newsletter, and he has some exciting news about Dragoncon 2011.... Anne is going!!!!! (health permitting).

So, anyone else going to start saving like crazy? Come rain, hail or shine I intend to be there! This will probably be my one and only chance to meet Anne, and I have no intention of missing it. Michael Whelan will also be there!

I just wanted to let you all know, if you hadn't heard already....

Nope. Saving up to get my daughter a new-ish car next year. That will take up all my extra cash. I hope Anne will be in health to make the trip and that anyone who can make it will be able to meet her!

Samsara you beat me to it!! I got the newsletter this morning and started jumping up and down I was so excited. I was hoping to meet Anne a couple years ago at Albacon, but she was unable to come due to health reasons.

Like Priscilla and Iím sure everyone here, I hope that Anne is with us for many more years to come and can make it to Dragoncon next year. It would be a once in a lifetime experience to meet her.

Being the type of person I am, I immediately started looking at prices for the convention as well as hotels. I guess I didnít realize how big of an event Dragoncon is.

4 of the 5 host hotels are already sold out, and the remaining hotel (Sheraton Atlanta) is close to selling out as well. CRAZY!!! I know rooms will free up as people cancel their reservations, but none the less I was quite surprised to find how far ahead people are booking for this event.

My parents and I have been talking all day about making plans to attend. Itís a gamble not knowing how Anneís health will be... especially when she cancelled a week before AlbaconÖ but itís one thatís worth taking again. Weíve decided that if we attend weíll reserve our hotel from now and then likely buy our tickets as it gets closer to and then drive down. Itíll be a longish drive, but sooo much cheaper than a plane ride.

Not to mention, the chance to see old/new MoM friends would be amazing as well!!

Got the newsletter today too ~ will have to save up heaps if I want to go or win tattslotto and if worse-case scenario and I can't get into hotel, I'll happily bunk at someone's house and pay expenses of food etc costs towards me staying there if you get my drift.

Thumbs up Re: Dragoncon 2011 Exciting News

I read it in the newsletter, and his banner was nice, remind me of something but at the moment I can't put my finger on it.

And trying to pack for a move 1/31/2011 we have to be out of here, moving to Weston, Wisconsin, stiil part of the Wausau Metro area, just a bit south and east of were we are now.

My grandmother and Anne are the same age, Anne older by three months.

My plan was always to try to "do" worldcon and dragoncon next year - now there's even more reason to go but please people don't put all your eggs in one basket. If you are going just to meet Anne be prepared to be disappointed in that

a) She might not get there
b) Access is very limited
c) There will tons of other people wanting to do the same (even those who don't participate on MoM or AMCF (NKT) - yes there are many!)

Wow - better that hotel sorted

Told hubby about it last night. He said I had to save up first before counting my eggs of meeting anyone famous or not-so-famous. I was lucky getting to Worldcon but that was in my back yard so to speak. The overseas version will be lot more trickier with 3 of us to save up for.

Definitely keep this in mind folks. Even if Anne does manage to make it, you will be one of hundreds of people there who hope to meet her.

I live in GA now if she is able to make the trip we might do a day there.

I've been to D*C three times, twice when Anne was present, along with Todd and Jody Lynn Nye.
So having expierenced it all and the high cost of it all a day/trip/ pass would be fine.

This event is quite expensiveÖ especially if you have to travel for it. That's partly why we are thinking of driving instead of flying. Saves so much money.

We reserved our hotel room last night at the Holiday Inn. Itís not one of the listed overflow hotels (there are several Holiday Inns), but itís a short walk to the host hotels and had good reviews so we went for it.

The more I look into it, the more exciting Dragoncon sounds. My parents and I are big Star Trek fans so it would be fun to sit in on those panels and events.

Our attendance is really going to depend on where I end up at school this fall. Itís a lot harder to take off days from a PhD programÖ than a masterís program, lol. So everything is up in the air at this point, while I talk with schools and prospective advisors.

I do have to agree with Kater thoughÖ I would much rather go to Ireland or for that matter anywhere in Europe, lol. Sometime in the future... I need to have a grown-up job first.

I hope that you can get time off. I think it's easier for me to get time off now than when I was a Masters Student. Then again, I am based in Europe. I hope that you can get the time off.

I hope so too Edith. What program are you in? Iím hoping to get my PhD in biology or ecology, focusing on either light pollution and/or wildlife conversation. Iíd like to eventually become a college professor.

In the states you are busy 24-7 with a PhD program. From what I've heard, I've had it pretty easy as a master's student. I did all my research this past summer (had to because I worked with bats), so I was able to just focus on school and my job during the official school year.

Iím not sure Iíll get into a program this fall... but Iím keeping my fingers crossed. I want to stay in the NE and not many schools have openings or funding right now. Plus I need to raise my GREs a little to be more competitive and since Iím limiting myself to programs in the NEÖ I have to be as competitive as possible. As Iím sure you know, itís really big commitment to join a PhD program and I want to join one within a decent driving distance to my family.

So Dragoncon may yet be in the cards for me!!

I'm a materials physicist
It's not a program as such, we are all fully paid up members of research staff (as far as the uni is concerned) as well as students (as far as letting agencies are concerned).

Good luck!

p.s. You might find this fun and relevant: PhD comics

Haha I have seen that before. My best friend who's in a neuroscience PhD program always posts the funny ones.

I especially like the current one about movies. I'm a huge movie fan (except horror & the really stupid comedies), so that one was perfect for me!!

Just remember there are *many* hotels close by that aren't 'official' host hotels, as the months go by DC usually lists 'overflow' hotels. Just be careful and don't plan on walking very far, especially late at night... be sure to use hotel shuttles if provided or have cash for a cab.

Well looks like we won't be going, darling child is up for "braces" so unless a miracle happens like we win lotto or inherit a small fortune to pay for everything, we won't be there.

The last time we went we stayed at a motel that was across the street from one of the bigger hotels. The hotel that was farthest away was only 2 blocks. It was a very nice hotel.
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...a_Georgia.html

We stayed at the Days Inn once, but, we had problems. We request a handicaped room with 2 double bed. We were that we could have a room like that. A week before the convetion I call to confirm our room & was told that they did not even have room like that. Luckily Mom could still walk some then.
