This is sorta a question...
Now I read in an article that AMC's father was a military man, does anyone know which service? I'm sayng this as the beginning of Moreta is reminding me of the film Battle of Britain! The weyrs are v smlar to the WW2 (U at least) airforce! Its striking as the riders' clothes are v similar to WW1/2 flying kit! now a proper q! How does the beginning of Moreta fill in the gaps in our knowledge of a fighting weyr? |

Up till that point there was only the Ninth Pass weyrs - mainly Benden trying to figure out what had been forgotten for 400 turns. This is a Weyr that has been fighting Thread for most of a Pass, and is in the routine. This is the only really organized thread fighting we see - in 9th pass it's either not enough riders or the thread is falling wrong or the fall is ignored in order to focus on grubs. I suppose Jaxom's first threadfighting is fairly routine but that focuses mainly on Ruth's unique position. Moreta leads the queen's wing but is also focusing on what is going on above her. We also see in-depth dragon injuries and how to deal with them, for the first time.

Yep, I was thinking more about the people though. The weyrlingmaster is pretty much equivilant to a warrant officer (ie Battle of Britain) or Sergeant major!

I got left with nothing to add again!
And I have to agree on the Weyrlingmaster, now that I think of it. Actually, it kinda makes sense, they've got to keep the weyrlings in line, teaching them while making sure they don't kill themselves or slack off. It's clear everyone knows what to do and how to do it, so they don't have to improvise, which is what the 9th Pass seems to do.

There is a limioted number of flying techniques which can be employed by any arial defence force to start with, and so there is likely to be great similarities - though it is arguable that the Falls in DF when they had a disadvantage of numbers is more comparable to the Battle of Britain - as there were few Spitfires and Lancasters compared to the number of fighters and bombers in the Luftwaffe!
The Weyrs are a military organisation, and so, especially during Passes, this comes to the fore. |

Yep, what's interesting is, that although I can find equivilant rank areas for the others I can't find one for the Queen riders. They don't fit with the roles of WAAF etc and they don't fit in any of the male categories. Anyone any ideas?
here's a rough idea of how I think things lie. Sorry, they're in UK ranks as I don't know how other rank systems go. Weyr leader (senior officer ie group captain) Wing leader (senior officer ie Wing commander) Wing second (senior officer ie squadron leader) Ordinary bronze and brown riders (junior officers ie flt lts, Flying officers, pilot officers) Blue and green riders (sgt pilots) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Weyrlingmaster (Warrant officer) Weyrlings (cadets) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ground crew (anti aircraft!/ airmen) Headwoman (WAAF officer) ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Queen riders have I suppose their own little structure of senior and junior officers but my idea falls down a bit here as they do alot of ground work as well. A mixture I suppose of WAAF and RAF. |

Not bad, though I would tend towards army ranks in many cases, such as wingseconds as sergeants etc.
As for the queen riders, they are quite different to most established armed forces in as such as they are female, though there are also similarities as they are a) ALL female and b) not in the 'front line' per se (flying below the main wings to pick off what is missed). Within the queen ranks, then they would have the same setup, just separate. |

OOoooOOOo.....this was an interesting discussion.
AMC's father was a Colonel *Kernel* to Anne and her family. It seems that, that eariler question of Edi's was never answered. I found out what rank her was when I read *Dragonholder* and used a photo of Anne's father for the face of Admiral Benden, whe I started the *Pern Character* series for Hans, Pern Musuem and Archives.

Yeah but, as far as I can ascertain, a back-room guy writing technical handbooks (he got all jealous of Anne's literary success).
