Default Mindboggling Prices For Harper Hall Of Pern

I have a brand new copy of The Harper Hall of Pern listed on ebay (it is exactly the same as the vintage copies only a brand new printing by the SFBC) and a person sent me an ebay message asking why I was selling it so cheap ...... they claimed it was selling for $70 - $700 on Amazon!!!! I asked them if they were SURE it was the same book as those were impossible prices! Sure enough, after the person suggested I go look for myself, it was true! I could hardly believe it but the lowest price listed for a copy (1 was a good used copy and 1 was listed as a new copy) was $59.00 and the highest was over $700.00 and was listed as a book club edition FIRST ED........these sellers must be insane.......are there really people out there who would pay such prices? I am selling a new, unread copy for $19.99 which is really just a few dollars more than I paid for it but oh well......if I listed it on ebay for $59.00 I can't imagine that anyone would buy it for that price as there are so many other copies also selling on ebay...............by the way, I got one of the SIGNED, LETTERED copies of Cooking Out of This World for less than what amazon sellers are trying to get for a BCE of HHP.........I still think they must be nuts!

I'd agree that those asking prices are nuts, and that few suckers would pay them--especially if they do a little research first.

Also, I've never heard of a first edition book club. How can you tell? And, if it is actually marked as such, is it really more valuable? It's still a book club edition, which is a much more cheaply made edition and less collectible (even if it is the only trilogy omnibus in the US).

I believe I saw a copy on eBay (maybe in the stores section) for $1020 the other day! I just went to try and find it again and it's not there, so maybe they corrected the price? But I too couldn't believe the price of some BCE's I've seen out there! And like Cheryl said, you have to do research!

Those prices are definitely nuts But, this is not the first case and certainly not the last. I've seen ths happen with several other of Anne's (not really highly collectible) books.

It ranges from outright silly prices (most often by pro sellers) to private sellers readily throwing a RARE on a regularly available Dragonsdawn 1st edition
Besides that I think that prices for the real Anne collectibles are often too high (i.e. they stay unsold very long, especially the earlier 1st edition hardbacks), but then most booksellers are not in a hurry and probably very hopeful

As the others say: research is very important and I dare say more so with Anne's books than other authors!

I've noticed Weyrflight Analogs at more than £20 on ebay.
I got mine for under £2 when I was looking for something else on ABE books

Gee those are rediculous...I paid about $25.00 for mine...but then again it was signed. There will always be people out there that think it's the $price$ of the book that makes it special... tsk tsk tsk!!!

Are any of these selling? Because I have that version at home and I like the cover art but not that much that I wouldn't sell it if anyone is actually biting on prices in the $70+ range.

Searching completed auctions, I can't find any that have sold recently, so I don't think they're going at that price Anareth.

I'd never pay prices that high for books for my own personaly enjoyment, and it amazes me that people think they can get such high prices for things.

School textbooks are a completely different story..... and those can still be ridicuously expensive even when they're used.

I can't imagine paying that much myself, but if someone wanted to pay ME for it...well, again, it's not THAT pretty.

Is it a print, Hans, or the original painting? That's probably my favorite picture of firelizards, except for the old-style HHT books with the quasi-Mideival look.

It's a high quality print on thick archival quality paper, Anareth.

I think Danne actually has (or had) one that was signed, for sale.

I paid $35 for Todd's Dragonholder ex-library. I know thats exspensive but It was out of print. The most I paid before that was $12 for Planet Pirates ex-library. It was also out of print. I like Hard Covers I am still looking for The Worlds of Anne McCaffrey at a reasonable price. $200 is not reasonable... not even with a book plate. When I finally aquire this one I will have all Anne's books in Hardcover even though some are omnibuses.

Very lovely drawing...even though(IMO) Menolly and Piemur look a bit young in it.

Mender, that's actually not a bad price for Dragonholder. The book has limited availability as Del Rey didn't keep it in print. Prices for it often start at $50 and go up from there.

My husband says that our local book dealer notes that some of the very early BC editions are starting to become collectible now that the original 1st editions have either dried up or have reached the stratosphere...but that's like 1950s-era BC editions, not later ones.

So I'd say that those types of prices are slightly out of line...
