Default Jim Baen - Baen Books - In Hospital

I can't believe I'm the only Barfly here! But since this happened to Jim on Monday and no one has posted it, I guess I get the <dubious> honor.

=== Official announcement from Toni ===

Dear Barflies

I'm sorry to have to announce that Jim Baen suffered a stroke on Monday,
and has been in the hospital ever since. His condition is serious, but
it's too early for any prognosis as to how he'll fare from here on in.

His family has arrived in NC, and are with him in the hospital. I've
been to see him, as have other members of Baen's staff and his friend
David Drake. In the meantime, so far as Baen Books is concerned, our
plans continue on schedule.

The business is fine, we're all simply very
concerned about Jim.

I do hope this isn't the start of a generation "going out" ....

Jim is not that old, he's born in 1943

WOW!!! I think we all have a least a few of his publications, quite a few of the SFBC books of Anne's, and many of the paperbacks were done by his company, I believe.

Lets all hope that he gets better, and can get back to his company and work.

One reason this is a near & dear subject to me, besides the fact that I have conversed with Eric Flint, Jim Baen and others is that Jim is one of the few publishers who is more open-minded and willing to gamble on a newbie.

I guess I'll just keep praying.

Count me in the praying group.

My mother had a stroke about 6 years ago. Her recovery is still ongoing. The good news about it is that she can take care of herself. The bad is that she is unable to hold down a job. So it costs me some money each time I see her as I try to help her out when I can. This can be hard since we have 4 children now but I have to help.

Hopefully his recovery will be smooth with no long lasting damage.

(says a little prayer)

My step-grandfather had a stroke 9 years ago, at age 55. At the time, they thought he wouldn't survive.
3 months later, he was back at home, walking (albeit with a limp), his speech only slightly slurred, although he has very limited use of his right arm - but being left handed he has no problem with that.
It was all put down to the use of what was at the time an experimental drug, which I believe is in general use now.
He's doing quite well now. I just hope Jim recovers just as well if not better.

Hmm, I can't think what it's called right now, but there is a drug that works wonders on reversing the effects of a stroke -- but it has to be given within a certain number of hours post-stroke or it doesn't help (or may even make it worse, so they won't just gamble and give it to you if they don't know when the stroke happened).

Just so you all know - he's in a coma, but has been "resting comfortably". He's past what someone called the "10-day" mark, so there's still hope. Family is there, people from Baen's office are visiting him every day, the web board is getting together care packages to send him.

At this point, no news is good news, I guess.

There was a tribute by David Drake that was very moving. Baen will be missed.
