Default My Graduation!

Originally posted at AMCF:

On Friday I graduated from the University of Essex after three years studying for my degree (BA (Hons) Modern History and Politics). I also stayed up in Colchester for the weekend to have some fun with my friends.

So Friday morning:

Parent's complained at the state of my shirt (apparently it "needed to be ironed" ) so they ironed it, and then Mum chose my tie (she'd've complained that I chose the wrong one otherwise, so I just let her). We finally left home at 10.30am. Got to uni after spending ages in a jam (stoopid roadworks) but at least the car had air con, since it was boiling outside!

The first thing I did was go and get my gown, robe and mortar board, and then got my official photo taken (the most important bit). Then parents took some photos outside:

After parents took the photos, I met a few mates and then went to the ceremony.

Which was boring, and boiling! (I was quite lucky since I was in the back row of the Graduands and had a fan behind me.) The speeches were long and boring, mainly. Then we got to go and shake the hand of the Chancellor. There were 200 Graduands in my ceremony, and we all had to clap for that entire time (my hands were red raw at the end).

After us Graduands had had our handshake and had the obligatory conversation with the Chancellor

"Well done, *insert name*"
"Thank you, sir"

then it was time for the Honorary Doctorate to be presented. The person who got in my ceremony was Simon Schama, a History Professor who did an excellent TV series called A History of Britain. His speech was quite engaging, unlike the rest of them.

After the ceremony was over, we headed to the departmental ceremony, where there was free food and drink.

Me and some of my mates (I'm in the white shirt):

After my parents went home, I went around one of my mates flat, where I was staying for the weekend. That night we went out for a meal with some other mates, which was fun.

The following day, we got up late (of course) and then went to Wetherspoons for breakfast ( ), and then wandered around Colchester town centre for a bit.

I bought a book (Phantom by Terry Goodkind):

and then got my hair cut ( @ Jaxie: there's a very recent pic of me):

Note: I make no claim to be photogenic

The folowing night we went out again - for another meal, with different friends, then went to the bars. (I drunk green beer there, which is made by buying a pint of lager and a WKD blue. Drink half the lager, then pour the WKD blue in. Drink the resulting green-coloured liquid. Tis nice. And good for busy bars and clubs, since it is a pint and a half in volume, and means fewer trips to the bar!)

Then omn Sunday (after another Wetherspoons breakfast) I came back home by train, which was a chore in itself as it turned out. It was fine until I got onto the Tube - Euston was shut due to a "local power cut" so I had to get off at camden and get a bus back to Euston station. Where all the trains that went in my direction were canceklled because a train had broken down in Berkhamstead, apparently, so I had to wait an hour and a half for the next train (since the Met line was closed for engineering work). So I went to the bar for a drink. And when i finally got onto that train, it was packed full. Like cattle. No room at all!

But luckily I got back home eventually.

All in all it was a fun weekend.

Oooh, I forgot to put in the pic of me with my parents:

And this is my certificate:

And just in case I haven't bored you enough yet...

The Ceremony Programme:

And my name in it:

Wow.

That was.... thorough? Though it sounds like you had a cracking time!

Sends me right back, that does. We had our graduate ball one night, which ended with a proper fry-up the following morning, then the graduation ceremony, and finally some more beer followed by sleep. And I know that never again in my life will I be capable of such a feat. You've gotta love the student lifestyle.

Gongrats Chris and well done! Simon Schama is one of my favourite historians who wrote several very good books!

What are you going to do now?

Still waiting to hear back from Uni whether I can do a Masters next year or not. Unfortunately, the Graduate Director has gone abroad on a research trip, so I have to wait until he gets back. If I don't get on the course, I'll just have to get a job

Simon Schama is an good historian, though many academic historiand dislike him because his writining is not "academic" in the sense that it is not analytical enough for many.

C_ris, I think Schama is and can be scientific enough but he's also smart enough to see that writing books the way he (and for that matter the French author Braudel) does will captivate and reach a far larger audience than when he would do the more scientific approach!

Good luck with your choice of doing Masters!

Oh, I agree! Some 'academic historians' can be so boring!

Many congrats Chris!

*edible confetti for everyone!*

(I think it's a rule for graduations to be long and boring with largely irrelevant speeches. I got to listen to then first-wife-Hillary Clinton maunder on about national health care instead of say, speculating on the future of the graduates)

Give me a few years and I shall be joining you. You did an honours thesis, right? What was it on?

You look very fetching in your stripy dress.

Man, how lucky was I? College graduation, we not only didn't have long-winded speechs, we got humourous ones! Of course, being in the Adirondacks, it snowed the morning of graduation (May 6)

I did a 10,000 word dissertation on Enoch Powell: Was he racist? (A British politician, 1950s-late 1980s)
