I am sure most everyone has heard about the 2 Roanoke reporters killed in Monteta (not sure of spelling) Virginia a few days ago. The place it happened, Bridge Water Plaza is a place I have been to many times. It breaks my heart that a place that caters to play, and enjoyment is a sight of senseless violence. The amount of support pouring in is over whelming. From other t.v. stations, local people and around the globe is heart warming.

And not one single white person demonstrated. Nor did the President choose to call it a racially motivated crime.

I apologize. This forum is not the place for such political talk. It will not happen again.

Aside from the horror of the actual event, one other thing that makes me furious are the "conspiracy theorists" who wasted no time claiming it never happened and no one is dead. It's all a hoax to take away their guns. They did the same with Sandy Hook. Maw lives near this recent tragedy, I live near Sandy Hook. We know they happened. We are a sad and angry country, that's my opinion and all I will say on this.

There's a theory going round that Lee Rigby wasn't murdered either: that it was all a put-up job between his family & the security services.

And, of course, the holocaust gas-chambers didn't happen either! Or the moon-landing!

I've heard about it and find it all very sad. I agree with what Priscilla said.

I survived the first week back without the promised sub aide; however, it was a frustrating and hellish week because I've a student who will knock stuff over, throw stuff, spit, and many more lovely actions if an adult is not watching him every moment. I felt more like a babysitter than a teacher at times. I am in the process of getting this student a one-on-one, but if the district takes it's usual time it could take most of the school year. It is very frustrating.

Hope you got your van and all is well, Mawra. Enjoy DragonCon.
I'm picking up my latest new laptop tomorrow. I hope this one lasts a while. I always seem to have bad luck with them, though i'm only accepting blame for two of the failures. This latest issue was a dead motherboard, on the same macheine that had a hard drive repalced last year and nelver seemed to stop crashing for long even after beeing tanken in three times.

Most of Dragoncon was fun. My scooted quit working Sat. so I ended up walking the aquarium. Over all the aquarium nwas good. When we went to leave I fell onto my left knee, because of a wet floor. The people at the info booth was NOT helpful. When they were told someone had fallen they said okay and did nothing. After about ten min. They sent someone over who said she would send someone to wipe the floor. They did allowed us to borrow a wheelchair as long as it could be back by 11. When we returned the chair the friend who had ridden with us had to demand to file an incident report. Only than did they send a medic out to check on me. Security also came out to the van so I could file report. The security people were very good and acted as if they carried that someone was hurt.

I did make it to con on Sun. the two tracks I was interested in were next to each other. So I did not need to walk much. Knee got worse so went to ER. Nothing broken, just bruised bone and pulled tendons. Went to con on Mon. but could not stay long. Missed the two workshops I had wanted to do Mon. and was unable to make it to dealers or art rooms.

Knee feels a bit better today.

I am so sorry you were hurt! I hope you'll be better soon! Did you never get to the dealer room or art show? That would make me really sad, those are some of my favorite parts of the convention.

I don't think I mentioned, I retired, effective September 1. I quit going to work back toward the end of July, using up about 5 weeks of sick leave.

After 15 years 9 months in the Missouri Department of Corrections, I had enough. It all was beginning to get to me, so I just walked away. No fanfare, no warning, I just quit going in.

From what I hear, the place still hasn't recovered.

Good.

Now I've been focusing on my crafts; the chain maille and wire wrap jewelry, photography, scroll saw art, and laser engraving.

Lots less stress.

Good for you Allen! I did the same thing with my daycare worker job 2 1/2 years ago after a blizzard. I got tired of the stress and aggravation. Since then I read and do a lot more sewing. I take pictures of the sunrises we get over the woods behind us. Maybe some day I'll print the best ones out and make an album. My husband is quitting his job in a little over a month, after 46+ years at the same place. I don't call it "retiring"; that word brings to mind wheelchairs, nursing homes and not being able to function any more. Nope, we quit to do other things!

A side benefit of quitting - when I quit I weighed 173 pounds, stress and eating/snacking all day on the job like everyone else did. Since then I use the treadmill 3 times a week and handweights. I am now at 138 and my goal is 130. It's been a long road, losing has not been easy for me as an "older" person, but so very satisying!

Good for you, Allen and Cilla! May your days continue to bless you both.

I hope next time you are able to accomplish all your goals at Dragoncon, Mawra. I hope to join you at Dragoncon within the next two years. Time will tell.

I'm adjusting to teaching 6th and 7th graders. However, I'll take my administrative credential exam in Feb. I plan to pass. Then starting in May, I'll begin to apply for program specialist positions at my district and the local districts around me. If all goes according to plan, then I'll be out of the class room next fall. I am happy and sad. Happy because I look forward to the challenge of being a program specialist. Sad because, the lack of support in my district, for dealing with severe behavior issues is leading to burn out and the need to leave the class room before I'm miserable and my students are miserable.

Keep Boaz in your thoughts. He is doing good in the new school and has plans for college. He is moving forward, but still has a tendency to trip himself up as if he's afraid of succeeding or wanting to control his failure. He still has self-esteem issues that only will be solved by his "loving himself". I know it'll come thanks to the wonderful support he has, but I fear that he'll make a "stupid mistake" beforehand in one of his attempted self sabotage occurrences. Thanks.

You guys rock!

I will absolutely keep Boaz in my thoughts. I am happy he is looking ahead to college and I hope if he does make any more "stupid mistakes" that they will be simple fixes and become fewer.

When you become a program specialist might this put you in a position to support the teachers who will be continuing to do the work you do now? If so, that would be a very good thing, since you know what the work is like!

Yes, not working for pay and all the side issues it brings up has been a wonderful relief for me! I can sew and read, no more worry that a phone call will come asking me to substitute for someone. After 20 years I was truly "burnt out!"

Thank you, Cilla, it means a lot to me. I've discovered the hardest part of parenting is not being able to "fix" everything. I can provide the support, therapy, etc that is needed, but they have to want to heal, make the changes, etc.

Yes, as a program specialist I hope to be able to help teachers like me. My goal is not to forget and to learn to work within or change the system for the better.

Good for you. I'm glad you are able to enjoy your "free" time.

We have been driving a bit over 35 miles every Saturday morning to set up our crafts at a Farmer's Market in Rolla, Missouri. This means getting up around 5, getting ready and on the road by 6, so we are ready to sell by 7 AM. We set up in a city parking lot, and have to be out by 1 PM.

Since the majority of the customers are coming to buy meat and produce, the craft people don't usually do very well. We hadn't sold anything in the 3 or 4 weeks of setting up.

But the college in Rolla was putting on their annual "Celebration of Nations" event yesterday. This meant that we were kicked out of our usual parking lot, into a different one, and had to be THERE by 6 AM instead of 7, we were told. But we had also been told that the produce people usually didn't do all that well, while the crafters practically sold out. The previous year, several did literally sell everything they had brought.

So up at 4, out the door by 5, there by 6. Got set up, and sat, waiting.

The people selling produce had a lot of their regular customers come through.

We sat. We were NOT having fun.

I had been making a wind chime, using a glass cheese dome for the bell and a cut glass bowl for the clapper. I got them drilled and strung, needing only a wind catcher for the bottom to finish it. I wanted to use a piece of the same hobby plywood that I've used for my scroll saw pictures and laser engrave a design on both sides. But what design? Finally, while searching through various designs on Google, I had an inspiration.

I imagine almost everyone is familiar with the traditional Christmas movie, "It's a Wonderful Life", starring James Stewart, and the line from it, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings". So I found a nice angel wing picture, tattoo flash, actually. Downloaded it, made my 6 inch by 5 inch pattern, set up the laser engraver, and started the burn. 3 hours and 58 minutes later, side 1 was done. But I thought it was a little light, and had lost a little detail.

So I went back and redid the pattern, changing a couple of the settings. I should have only changed 1, not 2. The new pattern was a bit too dark, but not bad. But I started it at 3:20 PM. It finished at 1 AM, on a night when I had wanted to be in bed by 10 because I was going to be up at 4.

I was in bed by 1:01.

That wind chime still needs to be finished.

So there we sat, me on slightly less than 3 hours sleep, most of the day, not selling anything. In the end, we stayed longer than most, and sold 1 laser engraved plaque and 2 pair of earrings. There were other craft vendors that didn't do that well.

We got almost 10 hours' sleep last night, though.

My nephew Seth is not doing well. He is having some of the same problems he had before his surgery. Very clumsy, falling down for no reason, ect... We don't know if he is having seizures or if something else going on.

Moonlady, it is never possible to "fix" everything. The best we can hope for is to soften the bumps and kiss the bruises.

Allen, that sounds like an awful lot of aggravation for very little return. Sorry for that!

Thanks. <snip>

You guys rock!
My teacher is retied, I think she is doing something like you program specialist supporting the new teacher for the visually impaired, who is replacing her

We were very lucky. It started at 8 pm and was completely eclipsed by about 10 pm. I went to bed so if there was any more excitement I missed it. For once it was a clear evening! I tried getting pictures but I do not have a good enough camera.

You had a lunar eclipse? All we had was a fire in a school lighting up the night sky First day of a two week school holiday, so hope they can fix things up enough to reopen then

And I agree it's so nice being able to work at things of your own choice in your own time! good luck to all of us
