Default A quick visit to Edinburgh

After much trouble, it now looks like I'm going to Edinburgh for a short stay. It was supposed to be Friday to Monday, but I guess Friday to Sunday is better than not going at all.

My husband is going to a small conference in Edinburgh on Oct. 8th to Oct. 10th, which is a Friday, so I thought that I'll just fly there Friday and we can spend a nice weekend vacation in the lovely city of Edinburgh.

Well, this is not so easy at all, 'cause we have a parrot, and he can of course not stay home alone when we are on vacation. We usually get friends to check on the parrot and feed him twice daily, but we thought that this time we would try and find a professional pet-sitter so we wouldn't have to "take advantage" of of friends every time we want to go somewhere.
We found what looked like a reliable pet-sitter on the internet and sent her an email. After a few days I called her because we didn't hear back from her. She said that she hadn't recieved any mail from us, but that she was very interested in taking care of a parrot and that she would be able to do so Saturday, Sunday and Monday. We agreed that i should try and send the email again so she would have the details about what to do and she would then write back with a price. We sent the new email from my husbands email account as well just to make sure that she would get the mail this time. After waiting a few days and not hearing back from her I called her again. This time she said she had got the mail, but had been too busy to answer. She then said that she would call me back. After not having heard from her a week I called her and left a message on her answering machine asking her to call me back as she had promised. She still hasn't called.

Well, the end of this story is that I ended up asking a a friend of ours if she would do us the favour to parrot-sit for the weekend, and because she is so very nice, she said yes. It's especially nice of her 'cause she hasn't got a bike and it takes her 20 to 30 minutes to walk to our flat, and she has to do this Friday evening, and Saturday and Sunday morning. She must really like playing with our Wii.

Anyway..... I'm going to Edinburgh!
I hope the weather will be relatively nice.

Having had a pet of some species or other (usually several ) most of my life, I know it can be a problem getting away for a few days. I don't think much of a critter-sitter who is too busy to respond to a simple email! I'm glad you found someone reliable to look after your bird. If you spend all your vacation time worrying about your pets you don't have much fun. Now you and your husband can have a nice weekend together. I hope you have a great time!

Too bad about the *Pet Sitter*, but with that kind of attitude she won't be in business very long.

Sorry I haven't answered before now, but I haven't really been much online lately.

Yes, it's an astronomy conference - I actually think it's an astro-biology one.

I hope I remember to bring my camera so I can take some nice pictures.

I'm almost out the door and on my way to the airport now.

Lanen and Steven are out exploring the world themselves, so I won't be seeing them in Edinburgh.

BBC went by and shot a close up of Anders at the conference.

We are going to the zoo on Saturday, and I've packed my camera, so you can expect to see lot's of pics of animals when I get back.

Has Marjon been round the ones here in Delft or is that a stupid question?
I went round them with Mum. Actually gardens or military museums all tend to be musts on my family holidays

Not that silly question at all, Edith! And no, I don't think she's been to any in/near Delft but then, I don't accompany her on every garden trip, just most of them. It seems to me I've visited more garden abroad than in my own country

I went round them with mum. Very good apart from the awful "artwork". They're run by the university so there's a display of various uses of plants and things and a terrapin in the stream

I saw that story on Reporting Scotland! Little did I know it was your husband who was listening so intently!

Enjoy the zoo tomorrow but do wear comfortable shoes, it's on a steep hill. Don't miss the Penguin Parade - I hope plenty leave the enclosure so you can watch them walk through the crowds. It's definitely the highlight of a visit! Best check at the zoo for the time of the event as it can vary.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your visit!

I'm back home again.

We had a lovely weekend in the beautiful city Edinburgh.
We only had rain Friday evening when we went out to eat dinner.
The weather was absolutely lovely on Saturday, and we spend more than three and a half hour at the zoo. Sunday we went to an exhibition about impressionism and Scotland - it was really good; especially because we took the audio tour where you hear about some of the paintings in headphones.
Both Saturday and Sunday we did a lot of shopping but actually only ended up buying a new pair of trousers for Anders, and a booklet about highland cows for me.

I've posted links to the photos that I took in the exhibit forum.

Hans, you never did come to Leiden to visit and see Hortus Botanicus this Summer. I guess we've all been busy.

Have you been to the botanical garden in Utrecht? It's very big and very nice if the weather is good.

Great you had a good time, Nef.

Indeed we didn't make it to Leiden and no, we have not visited the botanical gardens at Utrecht yet. As I recently wrote: I've got the funny feeling that I have seen and photographed more foreign gardens then Dutch

I think your guess is right, we've been far too busy, which is a pity.
