Default Time for a Change

It's about time, but I am in the process of converting from Microsloth XP to Linux (Fedora Core 3). I am in the process of finding out whether I can use my concordance programme and my word processing and other files (in my current My Documents folder) on Linux.

First step: partitioning my drive, so I can install both systems and so I can run my tests.

You should give here a quick glance; http://www.ubuntu.com/
Last time I looked *(a fare while ago)* they had a CD you could order that would run a complete linux setup from the CD drive, nothing was actualy installed.
Very good to give you an idea of what it's capable of.
As for running Windows programs......there's usually a linux substitute out there, so you may not need to run any.

Good luck and welcome to the darkside!

I know how much you enthuse about Linux, Bagpuss, so it is a relief to know (and hope) that I can rely on you for advice and support.

I want to start by having both Windoze and Linux on, until such a time as I can access the internet with the Linux, and find support for my hardware. I don't know if my printer is (Lexmark E220 laser printer), and I need that for a lot of things, least of all my bibliographies.

I have a DVD-ROM that has Knoppix set so that it will run on the cd/dvd drive. It also has Fedora Core 3 on it, and I got it with a book about Linux. So I am looking forward to fun and programming (I want to get back into the business of software development, which I used to do on the Commodore 64, believe it or not).

I'll try to point you in the right direction, but dependng on what you want to do with your machine, I may or may not have had any dealings with that "part" of linux.

Anyway, here are a couple of links that may be of some help.
