Default an odd collection

I am hoping some of you would be willing to help me with something I'm working on for Kibbie. She does not useally read threads in here. She has a very odd collection. She collects shopping bags. The kind that has the name of the store on it. I was hoping that maybe some of you who live some where other than Virginia would be willing to save some bags & mail them to me at my Mothers address. I am will to pay for shipping. I am hoping to give them to her for Christmas. If anyone is willing to help you can PM me. Thanks

Would you like some Welsh bags?

The cloth type, the paper type or the plastic type?

Most of my bags say Wal-Mart or Bruno's, both of which operate in Virginia, but if I do come up with something I think might work I'll be sure to let you know!

I'm sure you have cloth bags--you just have to buy them. (Or plastic net mesh--I got my first reusable bag at the Safeway in the Watergate.) Right now I have two from Whole Foods, one from Hannaford's that's made of recycled plastic bags, the Safeway bag, and Trader Joe's. Does she have a paper sack from TJ's? I know there's a Trader Joe's in Tyson's Corner, but I don't know if they're farther out in VA or where you are. (When last there, I don't think they were in Roanoke or anywhere in Rockbridge Co., where I lived.)

I do not think we have a TJ here. We have whole foods store is Charletsvil, which we have been to.

Lanen and I end up with lots of plastic Tesco, Sainsburys, Marks and Spencer and Somerfield bags. We're always happy to recycle them. There are two varieties of these bags: the thin, nasty throw-away variety (which we end up recycling as rubbish bags) or the better quality "bag for life", which is designed to be used over and over again. If it's for a collection I'm assuming you'd prefer the better quality ones?

If you PM me your address I can send you some. They are by no means special, though. It sounds like Edith could get you some more interesting UK bags.

P.S. Somewhere in my attic I have a 1969 paper Sainsburys carrier bag . It has a picture of a birthday cake with candles on the front and says "1969 50th anniversary". I'm not giving this one away, though. I'm going to keep it until 2019, sell it back to Sainsburys and buy myself a drink for my retirement from the proceeds.

Well, I never thought I'd be mentioning that collectible in this forum! Thanks for creating the opportunity mawra .

LOL, Steven! I'm sure you never thought you'd actually be able to mention that particular item in any forum. I sure hope you can buy more than a drink after the sale.
I had for the longest time a shopping bag from the Tacoma Mall, in Tacoma, WA. The outside was a painting done by the singer Tony Bennett and they gave them away at the door. I'm not sure if I still have it, but I doubt it. If I happen to run across it I'll PM you Mawra!

I was in Lexington--I think we had a Teeter and a Kroger and then they merged and they got rid of the Teeter. (This annoyed us all. No more Teeter cake.) Of course Roanoke was the nearst thing to civilization within fifty miles (barely) so we took what we could get.

If I hit Trader Joe's any time soon, remind me and I'll save a bag if you seriously want paper bags.

I'm trying to think.... a lot of the stores where I am in Maine are a lot of chain stores. I'm sure there are some really local things, but those are often mean more the actual town or city than anything else. The only store that people are required to go to in Maine is L.L. Bean in Freeport since that's the main store. There are factory shops all over the place now, but it's still part of Maine's tradition.

And now everyone reading this thread will know rule number one of being a tourist in Maine.

I have a bag right behind me from a local farmer's market. Unfortunately, the cats were playing in it so it's got a small rip.

I'll be going there this weekend though, so I'll get you another one. I'll look around for other bags - I have some Aldis bags, but they've been well used because they're heavy.

I'll look through all my bags and see what I can get you.

I've got some "green" bags (some are different colours) here. Actually I think these are made from recycled plastic and have various company logos on them, eg Safeway, Aldi's, Bunnings etc. I'll endeavor to hunt them out and see what I can find to add to a post parcel. In Australia, we're "trying" to reduce plastic bag usage by using environmentally friendly "green" (or red, pink, black etc) bags. If someone can give me an address to post these to Mawra, I can then send accordingly in time for Xmas.

It turns out most of the thin, nasty throw-away bags now are biodegradable. That isn't good for a collection. (I stored something in the attic once in a bag that turned out to be biodegradable, and after a few months it self-destructed into tiny fragments, leading to an interesting clear-up project!) I'll send you the "bag for life" variety.

Most of the bags we have are Wal-Mart, Barnes and Noble, or various stores which probably operate in Va. Carson's J.C. Penny, Kohl's, Target, etc.

Mawra, Your bags are on their way. I have sent some Tesco, Sainsburys, and Marks & Spencer bags as promised (I found the Somerfield bags are biodegradable so not much use to you). I've also added some uniquely Scottish bags, as well as a couple of surprises I picked up on my travels, to make sure there isn't too much of an overlap with Edith and P'ter (although I think between the three of us we have England, Scotland and Wales pretty much covered). I hope Kibbie is delighted.

Same message from me, Mawra. Brought the box to the postoffice today. It cotains bags from four different countries: The Netherlands, Ireland, Danmark and the UK. Some special ones and also special because the Irish are from a trip to Anne and the Danish ones from the trip to Eurocon.

Yes, that would be great. Another photo of all the bags laid out would look fantastic as well, although you might need to photograph them covering a football field from a hot air balloon.
