Well ED… I do invite comments from MoMers, on the artwork I have put up on occasion…and occasionally I get some critical comments from some of the MoMers. Mostly it’s the kind that say *I thought his/her hair was a different color…or that he/she doesn’t quite look the they thought they did in their own mind…but nothing so severe, YET, that I have felt like I was being battered or abused. You and I have many times disagreed about what a Pern character might look like…but we have seemed to be able to keep an open mind, or at least to agree that we do indeed pleasantly disagree. ![]() I can see where some MoMers might think you were somewhat overly critical this time with this portrait…but from you, in my opinion, that seems to be somewhat normal. I have learned in the time you have been here on MoM, that you are innately critical by nature…and have your own very definite opinions, and that you like to share them on a grand scale.![]() It really is too bad that this portrait has seemed to stir up such vigorous controversy. ![]() I believe that Cavatica is a very well meaning and caring person…who has enjoyed several pieces of my artwork in the past, as I have also very much enjoyed hers. I have to admit that to me, her comments towards your criticism of my portrait, were to put it mildly… hilariously put and meant somewhat lightly to be in my defense. As a member I do believe it* is her business* as it is any MoMers business, to be able to make comments….that’s what we do here !!!I am somewhat saddened to see that you have become so upset by all of this. Since we are all on a members forum, it does seem to me that we all have the right as members to comment on any given post…especially when we believe, in our opinions, that another member has been slighted in some manner, to be able to come to their defense as Cavatica did mine. I am thankful I have all the wonderful supporters as I do here on MoM.I don’t believe this is anything to go to the *RING* over…blood is hard to clean up and the paperwork is horrendous …or better said…I don’t think this is anything to go to the mattresses over…leave the gun, take the cannoli![]() ![]() .

OK, this was and IS a thread about Lady Maelin's Fandarel portrait and I expect the discussion to pertain to that as of now.
Sorry, but I will delete and/or move any posts not pertaining to the topic. If anybody want to discuss music, kindly do so elsewhere. Thank you for your cooperation, it is much appreciated. ETA: Music posts now moved to the Cafe.

Thank you.
Like I said, I really like Lady M's drawing. I always pictured Fandarel as a very large, bulky man. Not with a body-builder's well-defined physique, but with the physique of a professional weight-lifter. He would need the wide belt to act as a "kidney belt" and back brace because of his work. Perhaps a little round-shouldered or stooped in normal, relaxed stance, because of his life-long work at forge and anvil. In this portrait, he's obviously posing for the artist. Bet he got a shave and haircut for the portrait, as well. Normally he would be too busy to take time off to do more than whack off his hair and beard with a handy pair of shears when it got in his way or got singed from flying sparks. The artist always tries to flatter the subject for an "official" portrait, thus the ommission of the squint-lines around his eyes, from the years of peering into the fire. These are definitely not meant to be criticisms. I'm merely putting myself into the books, treating the picture as a commissioned portrait on Pern.

Draco...no criticisms taken at all...as a matter of fact you gave me a real chuckle imagining Fandarel shaving clean faced for the first time in ages and asking one of his kitchen staff women, if she'd give him a decent Gather hair cut, fitting to represent the Craft hall in his portrait.
Too bad someone didn't tell the artist to move the blackboard, so the flame thrower wouldn't look like it was coming out of his head...AAaaaarrrrgggg.... ![]() ![]()

Steven...Thank you my friend
, for the lovely compliment ...I'm very happy to know you're enjoying Fandarel.Weyrlady...Oh Lord...catus coming out of someone's head could be rather painful...but I guess, no more so that a flame thrower ![]() ![]() ![]() It might have been you and I, that were talking about *Robbie Coltrane* in the character thread...as I have alway thought he would have made a wonderful Fandarel...and I had my eye on him for the longest time...until I say Andre the Giant in this marvelous pose. After that Fandarel took over and the results are what you see. Thank you very kindly for the wonderful compliment.

I can't believe that I haven't been here in over two weeks! And missed this when it first came out! Better late than never tho.
Andre the Giant was my first impression too when I saw him. But then there are a lot of changes. I read how Maelin made the changes and how he sort of came into his own. Awesome job! I LOVE the haircut! Totally Fandarel! And his thumb is perfect! Good perspective and size....maybe a bit too clean tho, can you imagine the scrubbing he had to endure to get that clean! Anyhoo, another triumphant character of Pern brought to life. Just wonderful, my friend!

You know, to me he standing there thinking of new projects and ideas, mind at work while letting this creation be work on, and I can tell better about what looks like the wand is stick out of his head, but it just happens to be where the plans for making of the needed equipment are at. More like a teaching lesson more then anything else.

I'm sorry to be so late coming to this wonderful portrait! The attention to details such as the rough surface of the rock wall and the sheen (how'd you do that???) of the mechanical parts almost but not quite distract the eye from the Master himself. A lesser man would have faded into a figure blocking the view but Master Fandarel's commanding presence won't allow that to happen. It's brilliant, my friend. I love it!

Becky...Thank you for the compliments...glad you ejoyed him so much.
Ginny...Yes it does look a bit like he is thinking of his next project. Thanks, I am glad you like him. Sandi...Seems your still in time to enjoy Fandarel my dear friend...thank you for your very kind comments. The rocks I have in several of my drawings, I have played with for quite a while now...until I finally came up with large grain sandpaper...I put a small piece under the paper where the rocks are going to be...and rub gently with one of my colored pencils. The sandpaper roughens up the surface of the paper just a little...so that it will grab each layer of different color a bit differently and it builds up until.... WAA-LA... somewhat realistic looking stones. As for the flamethrower on the blackboard...shading my dear...years and years of shading... ...................![]() ![]()

One of the few times that symmetry pays off. If you had placed him off centre, say on golden mean, he wouldn't dominate the way he needs to.

Topaz...sorry I missed your comments until now...thank you kindly for them and I am very happy that you have enjoyed this portrait.
Peter...thank you dear friend...Fandarel kind of did his own thing in this one...I don't see how he could help but dominate the portrait. He has a way of dominating everything including the room...if only by sheer mass.... ![]()
