My was Eon ,,just loved the idea but wasn't too keen on the Hero
read the second almost as good
but I feel sadly SF aren't really coming up to scrarch,,the Old reads were
great,,the Books too ,,but the Covers were a bit naughty,,my Mum thought
I was reading Porno

remember Egar Rice Burroughs books WHEW!!!
and I still have about 15 of them ,

I remember my grandfather telling me when I first started reading that, generally, the racier the cover was, the milder the content of the story. Since I was reading some of his science fiction pulps and paperbacks at a very young age, he often tore the covers off so that he wouldn't have to explain them to his non-SF friends.

Brenda, I have to commend your taste. Asimov and Jules Verne, brilliant! H.G. Wells is pretty terrific, and The Time Machine is better than any of the movies made about it. So is War of the Worlds. And there's Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham, the only book I ever read that made me cringe away from sunflowers!

I like War of the Worlds but I had trouble with The Time Machine. I should try that again sometime.

I still haven't finished 20,000 Leagues - I have this habit of starting other books if my current book is not in the same room with me...

How true… I often read two or more books at the same time, and some on the computer as well. I would so like to get back to some of the old books which I read as a child, but there are new ones popping out over and over again, and even some of those that I buy at the stores I don’t have time to read… I’m too caught up with school and books for school.

I finally finished "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"! I kept having to take a break and come back - it gets a little tedious when he starts describing every. kind. of fish. they can see out the windows!

Anybody here read Lois McMaster Bujold's "Miles Vorkosigan" series? They are splendid - SF that is largely character-driven. Multiple Hugo- and Nebula-award winners and rightly so. Our Anne put me on to these, by lending me her precious copies of Komarr and A Civil Campaign, which are at the END of the series. So, having read them and got wildly curious, I went out and bought the earlier books, which are all terrific. Very highly recommended!

Definitely!

I started with ACC back when it was being serialised online, and then went back and got through the whole set.

[I've also just finished reading a delightful MVK fanfic which turns Lois' usual plot driver of 'what's the worst thing I can do to these characters (that they can learn from)' on its head, and instead throws a whole heap of good things in the direction of Barrayar. It's a super read, and for anyone who likes both Bujold and fanfic, I'd suggest they take a look. It keeps close to canon but diverges into AU between Winterfair Gifts and Diplomatic Immunity]

Lanen, have you read Winterfair Gifts? Don't move on to DI without reading it, if you can.

I read a few but for some reason couldn't get into them enough to want to read more of them. I did love her Sharing Knife quadrilogy (sp?) which is fantasy, and sucked me in as much as Deed of Paksenarrion.

Have read DI too, which unfortunately didn't feel as though Lois' heart was in it. Did you get that impression? It seemed rather like a 'my publisher wants another Miles book so under protest here it is'. Or am I imagining things?

Brenda, I read the first of her Sharing Knife series and thought it was kind of ok, but realised that I really didn't give a darn about the characters. Glad you like it though, she's a brill author. Would like to meet her someday, though I suspect I'd be all shy.

I'm not sure that her heart wasn't in it, more that she hit such a high standard with the run-up of Komarr and ACC that it'd be hard to continue in that vein.

I've not read the Sharing Knife novels, but I love love LOVE the first two of her five-gods novels - The Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls.

I think there are certain themes that she tackles that really resonate with me - I did a lot of growing up over the past few years, and survived some major challenges. She's been there too, there's no mistaking it. I don't know what happened in her own life, but she learned and grew from it, that's for sure.

My last SF book would have been Connie Willis' Blackout. A more or less continuation of the time travel story she's told in Doomsday and To Say Nothing of the Dog. Very good reading.

I reread Nancy Farmer's The Ear, The Eye, and The Arm, which is the kind of book you wish there were more of. Three sheltered children get kidnapped in Zimbabwe in 2194, and the detectives hired to find them are mutants with unique abilities. Much, much better than a simple blurb can make it sound. The chase goes from the underbelly of the city, to a refuge that preserves the past - both the good and the bad - and ends in a mile-high skyscraper, facing an unrealized national threat to the spirit of the country.

This is supposed to be a kid's book, but I get a lot more out of it now than I did in 6th grade. It's definitely worth a read, just for an interesting take on the future.

Kibbie & I have started read Tamora Pierce book. We have a couple of books from the protector of the small & a couple of others. We both can't wait to get the ones we don't have.

It is a good thing kibbie & I like to read the same kind of books (mostly). I don't think we could afford to feed out habit otherwise.

Finished a reread of John Scalzi's Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigade. Also finished a first time read of the third book in the series, The Last Colony. Now reading Zoe's Tale which is a recap of The Last Colony told from the viewpoint of a 15 year-old girl. The books are all witty and somewhat thought provoking. Recommended for those who like good space opera.

The Sunless Countries by Karl Schroeder
This is the fourth book of the Virga series, a far-future mix of sense-of-wonder SF adventure and hard SF environment building set in an artificially constructed bubble of air with artificial fusion-based suns providing light to cities that fake gravity by spinning. While starting here would mean missing getting to know the world, the introduction of a few main characters, and the slow revelation of the deeper series plot, the main risk is spoiling earlier books. The plot of The Sunless Countries itself stands on its own fairly well, bringing the reader up to speed where required.

I think it would qualify as much as Anne's Pern universe.

Now reading David Weber's A Mighty Fortress. It's the fourth book (doorstopper) in the series that started with Off Armageddon Reef. I do wish he didn't have so many info dumps, but I like the book and story in spite of that.

I had trouble with The Time Machine the first time around, too. I enjoyed it the second time, though.

The last science fiction book I read (besides my own) was back in November. FarScape: House of Cards. The only FarScape novel I will read, the other two being not worth it from what I hear. This one, though, really holds up to the greatness of the show it's based on.

Somewhere I read a short story which tells what happens to the Time Traveler after he disappears at the end of the book. He ends up in France, with one of his crystals cracked, and he almost manages to get a new one made but succumbs to the black plague before it is finished.

I just read Against All Enemies by John G. Hemry. I had also recently read A Just Determination, which is about the same character and comes first. Space military fiction, very readable, focusing on a young officer who is also the ship's legal officer; complicated situations arise. Some courtroom scenes in each book.

I've finally finished First and Last Men by Olaf Stapledon. It's taken me nearly 8 months. It's a good book but it's so deep that I've been reading it bit by bit. I made a push and finished it on the train this evening.
The bit that actually took longest was the first few chapters about the first men. Once you get past the fact that history has diverged somewhat from what people thought in 1930, it's very, very good. Considering it was written in 1930 the stuff on nuclear power and genetic engineering isn't that bad

I've been spending time in the Liaden universe. A reread of the existing books and then on to Mouse and Dragon which is the sequel to Scout's Progress and a bit sad at the ending. Then a reread of Fledgling and on to that sequel, Saltation. This just leaves me wanting more. Of course the authors of these books is Sharon Lee & Steve Miller.

Also finished a first time read of the third book in the series, The Last Colony. Now reading Zoe's Tale which is a recap of The Last Colony told from the viewpoint of a 15 year-old girl. The books are all witty and somewhat thought provoking. Recommended for those who like good space opera.

While starting here would mean missing getting to know the world, the introduction of a few main characters, and the slow revelation of the deeper series plot, the main risk is spoiling earlier books. The plot of The Sunless Countries itself stands on its own fairly well, bringing the reader up to speed where required. __________________ drive a man wild

He ends up in France, with one of his crystals cracked, and he almost manages to get a new one made but succumbs to the black plague before it is finished. I just read Against All Enemies by John G. Hemry. I had also recently read A Just Determination, which is about the same character and comes first. Space military fiction, very readable, focusing on a young officer who is also the ship's legal officer; complicated situations arise. Some courtroom scenes in each book. __________________ . It's taken me nearly 8 months. It's a good book but it's so deep that I've been reading it bit by bit. I made a push and finished it on the train this evening. The bit that actually took longest was the first few chapters about the first men. Once you get past the fact that history has diverged somewhat from what people thought in 1930, it's very, very good. A reread of the existing books and then on to Mouse and Dragon which is the sequel to Scout's Progress and a bit sad at the ending. Then a reread of Fledgling and on to that sequel, Saltation. This just leaves me wanting more. Of course the authors of these books is Sharon Lee & Steve Miller.
