Yes, I have taken a look at the ballads. I was reading there was some discrepancies there, as well, as to which versions of which ballads were the older (and supposedly therefore "truer") lines. At this point, I don't think it matters. To every legend, every myth, there lies at the heart a kernel of truth.
History tells us there was no Robert, Earl of Huntingdon... but there WAS a SON of the Earl of Huntingdon named Robert. And it seems there are conflicting reports about the young man's date of death. Interesting, no? (And the family was tied to Robert the Bruce and the Scots throne as well.)
