Greek mythology: In one myth, a boyhood friend of Phaethon, son of Apollo, was called Cygnus who when he discovered Phaethon had fallen into the river, dove after him and Zeus took pity and turned him into a swan. Cygnus is also a star formation, also known as the Northern Cross near Deneb www.pantheon.org/articles/a/apollo.html

Celtic mythology regards the Children of Lir to be able to change from swans into 2 boys and 1 girl or vice versa.
