I guess it is kinda inconsistent, especially with Tia, since Alex ran up steps in his interview with her. Tia did tend to be an all purpose ship, grav sled, low level entry for it and the servos, cargo space and the like. Those descriptions would imply to me at least that the passenger area was above the cargo. probably cargo surrounded a central column as well, but that column was engines, fuel etc... My image of the lift has been a trench going up the side of the ship, but enclosed at its top seat. make it so it can be pressurized, with smallest area for possible seal failure. Wasn't there an issue with putting a gurney in/on the lift in Killashandra? Aside from Killa deciding she walked off a ship to get on the planet, she'd walk onto a ship to get back off.
