One of the methods they used in 1665 to try to dispel the plague was to fire blank cannon along the banks of the Thames. Incidentally, most rats can outrun a fire.

The army tried the same sort of thing in WW1 against poison gas. They'd light fuses attached to cardboard boxes of explosive and throw them at the approaching gas.
