I'm not sure whether this could happen, but something like the Red Planet pulling some comet or something out of the Oort cloud and swinging it into Pern?

Thanks for all the advice, I'm sure it will come it useful! I've received all the details now, and I'm starting on Monday for 2 weeks. Now all I have to worry about is remembering to wake up at 6!
