Re: Worst Books

Skies was my least-fav Pern book. Everything fell together entirely too conveniently for me. I only read the first of the Petaybee series, and didn't finish Acorna, so I guess those would also be...

Re: What type of Talent?

I freak my boss out enough already by telling him what will break and when....

But some telekenetic abilities with fine control for delicate work would sure help out.

Re: Books you just couldn't finish!

A friend loaned me her copy of Eragon and I gave it back unread. I couldn't see what the fuss was about because it just didn't interest me at all and the writing quality wasn't that great. I also...

Thanks for not dumping me in the inactive bin, even though I did disappear for a while! :faint2:

Re: Why was Lessa's talent at hearing dragons important?

By the time riders engage threadfall, they're rather like an army in the air. They have to go where they are told to go, when they are told to, and that doesn't take a lot of abstract thought. If...

Re: Why was Lessa's talent at hearing dragons important?

Okay, there's an idea. How would a Weyrwoman see everyone, though, if the Weyrleader couldn't? And what does that do to the traditional division of responsibilities between the Weyrleader and the...

Re: New Name for the list.. Jack Whyte

Those are very nice. I like them. If you want grittier Arthur fiction, the sort that leaves you squirming a bit as you consider the not-so-nice side of the legends, try Bernard Cornwell's series,...

Re: Why was Lessa's talent at hearing dragons important?

Er...I'm not concered with Dragonsblood at the moment, particularly since I didn't really like the book with the whers--and if I always looked to a later book for explanation, then Masterharper would...

Re: Why was Lessa's talent at hearing dragons important?

Really? I've completely forgotten who it was in Moreta's time, then, and as I recall, Moreta's Weyr Fort got on just fine without one. If there is one in each of the other books, then no doubt...

Re: Why was Lessa's talent at hearing dragons important?

Sorry, it's still not making sense, unless it's that Lessa has more range than dragons. (Which seems incredibly unlikely to me.) F'lar still has to tell Mnementh to tell Lessa what he wants the...

Why was Lessa's talent at hearing dragons important?

I remember at some point wondering why F'lar was so excited that Lessa could hear all of the dragons. Sure, it's a neat parlor trick, but it certainly won't save any time in relaying instructions to...

Re: Mary Stewart

"In Winter's Shadow" was the third Bradshaw book.

"Moonspinners" was on Crete.

Re: Mary Stewart

"The Wicked Day" is a Stewart book and does come after the three Merlin books, but "Hawk of May" and "Kingdom of Summer" were by Gillian Bradshaw.

The Merlin books hooked me--I like her vision...

Re: Books you just couldn't finish!

He's the fellow who wrote Nimitz Class, isn't he? Which was one of the most poorly-researched books I've ever had the misfortune to lay hands on. His constant natter about the "6000 husbands,...

Re: If you had to live the life of one of the characters....

Famira, Asengar's lady. Mostly because she's one of the few in the books who didn't have a hard life marked by a lot of loss. And because she was wealthy enough to have good plumbing. ;)

Re: Which book is your favourite?

Moreta, with Nerilka as a close second. I think it's because the solutions to the problems were so much more real. They had fewer solutions just handed to them, plot-wise, than the other books.

Re: Ballybran

I'd love to go, but I certainly wouldn't want to be a singer. Imagine all of the possibilities for developing new crystal products, right there at the source!
