Precedent to Petaybee

I've been reading a collection of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short science fiction, including a story featuring Professor Challenger from The Lost World. The story is called "When the World Screamed" and made me wonder if Anne had it in the back of her mind when she created Petaybee!

In it, Professor Challenger theorizes that the earth is a living creature, and determines to wake it; he has a crew drill down eight miles through the crust, at which point they reach a very strange "soft" layer. They drop an artesian drill down into it, and barely make it out alive before there is an impossible noise as the very earth screams; all the lifts and other apparatus are violently ejected from the tunnel, followed by an enormous amount of foul-smelling sludge; and at the same time, all around the world, violent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions register the Earth's distress at having been pricked.

It was that last bit about the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that really made me think of Petaybee.

Hmm, interesting. I wonder. Then again it could be a very strange coincidence.

Yeah... Kath at the NKT said something about "HOW many cultures have had 'living earth' mythology?" But this isn't "Mother Earth", this is talking about the planet as an alien creature which objects to being drilled into. Closer to Petaybee than to those myths, although Petaybee itself isn't as far from those myths, being more aware of and caring about the creatures living on its surface.

I think it just goes to show how hard it is to have a truly original idea for a scifi book, given the number stories already written.

Yep - but only the basic concept as I stated it bears any resemblance to PTB!

I think Cheryl's got a point. I sort of remember at least two other stories about a "living earth" and also a TV show. The show might have been Twilight Zone or Outer Limits, I don't remember much about it but I was a kid when I saw it.

There is a Doctor Who story Inferno that is very similar.

Hi--no, we were not to our knowledge following any other world when we invented Petaybee. As for the reaction to the drilling seeming similar--well, nobody likes going to the dentist, and the dentist is drilling to help you--what if s/he were drilling into you just to remove valuable bits of you?
The "living earth" idea follows the whole Gaia religion thing--not exactly what we had in mind either. However, I did draw some inspiration from a PBS special on spirituality and environmental concerns. Someone was saying that if we considered the earth a nurturing relative we might treat it better, which made me think it would be interesting if the planet in question could make it perfectly clear to some of us at least that it was alive, felt things, and liked or disliked some types of human behavior.
