Experimental set with my new SLR

As a surprise early birthday present (in time for me to learn how to use it before an upcoming vacation), my wonderful hubby just got me a digital SLR.

I'm in heaven with the quality of the pictures it takes. This is a smattering of shots I've taken in the last two days.

Great photo's and that picture of your daughter is outright fabulous; certainly worth enlarging and framing. Wow, what a great composition!

I also like your crystal. What did you use as lighting?

Kath, not in a million years.

Hans, I was so happy the camera was willing to focus for that one, and am very pleased that one of the set turned out so perfect.

The crystal bowl is in a small display case and lit by the built in light on it's lowest setting.

Wow. Your pictures are terrific Cheryl. :good: What camera do you have? It looks like it came with a pretty terrific lens as well.

It's the Canon EOS Rebel T1i, called the 500D in Europe. The lens I'm using is not the kit lens it came with; it's the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM.

Cheryl...it's lovely that you got such a fantastic new camera, although I thought the pictures you have been taking were already marvelous...but I must agree, I love the new photos even better...good luck and have a lot of fun shooting a whole new group of photos this summer.

Wow! Eye-popping!! As a fan of blurry backgrounds, I love the shallow apertures you're using, and the sharpness of the subject! Hans is certainly right about the one of your daughter- that one deserves to be framed and shown off.

I have the "cousin" of the T1i, the Rebel XTi. Awesome, awesome camera!!

Cheryl = the 24-105 came as kit lens with my 5D. I've spent thousands on glass since, but somehow it's that lens that tends to stay on the camera.

It covers just about every sensible eventuality and the quality is eye-popping. Even though its macro setting is not 'real' macro, it's good enough for most purposes.

I guarantee you'll enjoy it for years to come - and what a cracking start ypu've made! You clearly have the 'eye'. Bravo!

Re: Experimental set with my new SLR

Thanks!

The lens was highly recommended by my brother-in-law, who has quite a lot of them and is an outstanding amateur photographer. It's his favorite general purpose lens too.

Definitely it's more than meeting my needs for now, though I can see getting a dedicated macro lens and telephoto lens down the road. For now I need to work on learning all the manual controls on the camera, what settings to change to get the effect I want.
