Wefts

My Planet Pirate canon is incredibly rusty, and I haven't touched the Planet Pirate books since...I was twelve? Eleven? Over ten years ago, nearer fourteen years ago. So I thought I'd come here.

A rabid plotbunny bit me in the Talent forum (I'll try not to bite any of you while foaming at the mouth, but no promises!). What if the Talents met Wefts, which are pretty darn cool, rather than Mrdinis, in the depths of space?

I always like the Wefts, but the only thing I remember about them is that A) they're shapeshifters, B) they have 3 genders and become sterile if they leave their homeworld, and C) when choosing a human form, they often base them on celebrities, tweaking the features just enough that it's not an exact match.

What else is known about the Wefts? Do we know the name of their planets or homeworld? How many Wefts did we meet in the books? I just remember the one that...Sassinack?...had a crush on. I also have a mental image that they are somewhat triangular, angular, and vaguely resemble the aliens from Alien.

Re: Wefts

They are telepath in the "native form", there is something about a Weft Ensign Huli had extruded, eight or ten tentalelike arms with two fingers each, its from the Death of Sleep when Lunze was on the FSP Fleet Ban Sidhe, I somewhat remember that for they do look humanord form when around humans, I had to look up my copy of the book to find it. I hope this infromation is helpful, I have been following along with this, there is more about Wefts in there too, of the top of my head, it explanes more about them there. Along with the specail link Sass had with them in that book and next one. I have read lately I don't have all three books.

Oh, they're telepathic? Yeah, I vaguely remember that. Oh that rocks. That works quite well. Thank you! I'll have to find the second book just to read up on them.

Edit: You know what, The Planet Pirates seems to actually be in stock in my area. I bet it's really old stock or something, because I thought it'd all gone out of print. Guess what I'm picking up asap? :D

In the US, all the books are still in print, though the original two Dino Planet books are only available in The Mystery of Ireta omnibus edition.

I've seen the two Dinosaur Planet books separately in B&N, fairly recently.

Mmmm. Me too! I think they are awesomely cool LOL I always thought that was an odd choice - the choosing someone famous and then tweaking it. Or maybe people would just go "Wow, you really look like that holovid star!" and then stop thinking about it LOL

LOL Where did you get that from? As far as I can recall, they kind of look like giant protozoans. Or is that just me making stuff up???? LOL Entirely possible .... I don't have any of my PP books with me so I can't look it up.

I know that they are telepathic with the Ssli larvae in their sessile stage and with the odd human who they think can accept that mode of communication (which, of course, Sassinak could ....)

she has an open mind, friends that would help and between the Ssli adut (which she met it as a liarvae as a cadet) and the Weft on her first posting they were able to save her, and get the on causing problems, she was a very good problem solver.

Yes, I also read that they think its bad for thir youngs to change shape in public its in the Death of Sleep

Still can find my copy of Sassinak yet, just saw this update an had something I found while not on-line, so I post what I do know, something about have a ring and limbs, using that to regrow it? I know its in Sassinak also something, about the connection with the Ssli liarvae and a Weft contacting Sassinak in the last book, I have not read it in years so I may have the wrong book. "sigh".

*nods* I remember that part too. I think it was ..... one of her Weft officers or ensigns had been severely hurt and she was told that as the 'central' ring was still relatively intact then it could regenerate somehow.

Would love it if someone with the books could find the exact quote .......? :D

Re: Wefts

Which sounds like she got the idea from starfish!

There's a significant episode in "Sassinak" when, after Sassinak is knocked out and ejected in an escape pod, the Wefts work with the Ssli to track her down. Apparently the Wefts had to revert to their native form to do that, which freaked out some of the officers! :D

Found it by chance at the end of chapter ten in Sassinak:
