Dorchester Publishing

There are a few blogs I enjoy following for posts on the publishing industry. I'm incensed enough about what I just read about the publishing house Dorchester to want to pass the information on. Mostly Dorchester publishes romances, but they dabble in other genres so whether or not you read romance you may still buy books from them.

The full post with details can be found here. To summarize, Dorchester seems to have serious issues in paying authors properly. Some authors haven't received royalty checks in years, an issue Dorchester has apparently admitted. More recently, Dorchester has continued to sell digital copies of books for which they no longer own the rights to publish, and in at least one case offered a book for free download. The authors are not being compensated for these sales, and Dorchester is not responding to cease&desist orders to stop the sales.

On a more general note, I can recommend the Writer Beware bit of the SFWA website. It is full of good information about the saints and sinners of publishing, and it's available to the general public as far as I know. Always worth having another source of information!
