Damia cover concept art

So. I was noodling around on the web, looking for a larger picture of the Damia coverart we all know and love. And I chanced upon two *preliminary* versions of the Damia coverart, both done as I understand it by Romas Kukalis. I found them here. The meta data for the images says 2009, which seems to indicate someone took pics and uploaded them fairly recently (yes, recently, this fandom moves slow), which is probably why I just discovered this. If they'd been up in 2001 or so I would have been all over them back then.

They are incredibly creepy. And Damia looks like an 80s hooker. (Am I blunt? I am blunt.) But--I do understand that they were preliminaries, which aren't supposed to be perfect, and obviously folks caught onto their flaws, since the final version was pretty spiffy.

Version One: Afra's gaze is penetrating in every meaning of the word.

I think in modern slang, Afra would be called a "creeper". (Because "creep" is no longer good enough for teens?) Unless perhaps that isn't Afra? Maybe it was intended to be Sodan. In which case, the image is right-on for that aspect. Sodan was creepy.

Damia's still alarming, however. Afra: "Hey mom, dad--look what I'm going to marry!" Gos and Cheswina: "There was always something wrong with you, Afra, but now we have proof."

Art director: AHHHH! THE GAZE! CLOSE THE EYES! CLOSE THEM!

Version Two: They closed his eyes. And put flowers in Damia's hair.

Damia's gained some heavy eyeliner. If I had to guess, they were attempting to go for sultry/sexy Damia here (and in the prior version)...perhaps trying to go for a temptress that lured in the Methody Capellan...it just wasn't working.

I don't know what the rocks puffing red smoke are, but they look pretty phallic.

Final Version: In case we forget, here's the actual coverart that the book had.

I like how Afra and Damia are posing while the liner they should be teleporting says, "Screw it, they're taking too long, we'll just use this handy runway and our chemical rockets. Nobody will mind: Iota Aurigae is already a wasteland of rock."

I do like (no sarcasm) how the final version has a Dama that looks confident and Prime-like, like her mother. The earlier two versions make it clear we could have had a Damia more interested in her sex appeal than confident in her Talent. Final cover wins by a longshot.

Oh dear. The first version Afra's definitely creepy!

I do like his crossed eyes in the second one though! Crazy!

Re: Damia cover concept art

Crossed? Huh. I thought they were closed, but maybe not. It's kind of hard to tell. Or perhaps they're closed AND crossed, and supposed to symbolize the Rowan and Damia both driving him nuts. Or maybe since there's no runway in that one, he's picking up Damia's slack and lobbing that shuttle somewhere, but since it's an Iota Aurigae shuttle it's kind of heavy with ore, so he's crosseyed.

You know, the top one reminds me of a bad Facebook photo. Damia has the whole overdone makeup thing happening, the duck-face pout, and a random mangy-looking pet crawling on her.

Makes you glad they didn't go with the first two! Eeek.

Made a couple of very simple Talent avatars from these as well as the other coverart:

Domini...I am amazed that you were able to find these...as most artist don't generally show
or keep their preliminary sketches...especially after finishing a painting project.

As you look at all three of these paintings, you can see the progression they took to the finished
cover painting...taking the best parts of the first two and putting them in the third one...to achieve
the beautiful polished look we get to finally see on the cover.

Thanks Domini for finding these and sharing your findings...

Oooh.. how did I miss this?

I agree with Maelin. It is very interesting to watch the progression of the work through the various stages and then to see the finished piece.

I'm sure glad they went with the 3rd one!

Kudos actually go to the guy who took photos of them and put them on the web. They're quite easy to find if you go looking for coverart...they're some of the first images in a google image search.

The site I found them on seems to be a site where art collectors "brag" about their acquisitions; I'm guessing the person who took the photos was able to purchase the preliminaries and final from Romas at some period in the last few years.

Which saddens me a bit, because I don't think I'll ever be able to get a print of the Damia coverart from an artist website if the original's been sold.

I can imagine Anne's response to each of these versions of cover art:

1: "No, that's not them."

2: "NO! That is most definitely not them!"

3: "AH HA! That's them!"
