I may need to define an earlier answer, when P'ter asked if it was on a river. It is NOT on the river, but when it was built, you could have seen the river from the upper porch and windows.

Is the birth/living place of an infamous person we are looking for, well known for somewhat shady deeds perhaps on the wrong side of the law?

Lily...free of charge,

Were you asking me to clarify whether the public could visit free of charge?

I meant, was it now a public building where people could visit, for any reason

In Albany?

P'ter Nov 23 2010 02:13 PM

Re: Where in the World #277

Well it's not the birthplace of JFK or Nixon...

I asked about river because there's a length of rope on the right of the photo, so I wondered whether it had been 'shot' from the water...

Is that a sentry in the porch?

AnnMarie Nov 23 2010 07:18 PM

Re: Where in the World #277

Lily's PM was correct! Good detective work, Lily!

Hans... yes, it is in Albany
P'ter... what you see sitting on the porch is a SCARECROW with a pumpkin head.... the picture was taken in October....

We now have three corret answers. I will wait until tonight before unveiling the answer...unless those who haven't gotten it want to keep trying a few more days... let me know.

Re: Where in the World #277

Okay, the answer revealed:

It's the NY state Governor's Mansion, currently home to Patterson the Peabrained. Andrew Como, it's next inhabitant, spent part of his growing years there while his dad was governor. Prior to 1877, governors of New York did not have an official residence in Albany. After Governor Samuel J. Tilden rented 138 Eagle Street for two years, Governor Lucius Robinson convinced the State Legislature to buy the house Originally built in 1856, the Executive Mansion reflects the many different styles of the last half of the 19th century. The first house on this site was a simple Italianate structure that was renovated in the in 1860’s into a home with elaborate Second Empire details.

As years passed and as tastes changed and families grew, the Mansion evolved from a simple two-story house into the picturesque Queen Anne style building it is today. In 1971 the Executive Mansion and its grounds earned a place on the National Historic Register.

P'ter, I took the picture from the Aquaduck on Halloween, which is why you see part of the rope there...it's on one of the life preservers on the duck.
