If you had to be a character...

A variation on the favorite character question...

If you had to live the life of one of Anne's characters from any book, who would you choose and why?

F'lar's one of my favorite characters, but I'd never want to be him and not just cause I don't want to switch genders. ;)

For now I'm leaning towards being Dana Lovell from Stitch in Snow. She lead a pretty normal life on earth but did get a little bit of excitement and got her man in the end (and I can picture them living a nice cozy life in Ireland together). The life of someone like Lessa or Damia is just too crazy for me!

(I bet Pam will choose to be Killa, so she can be with Lars Dahl! :redfruit: )

ANY Character? The boy from BLACK HORSES FOR THE KING. I could care less about the gender issue. He got to travel with Arthur and work with horses! Does it get any better???

Re: If you had to be a character...

I think I'd want to be Mairi From Dragonsdawn... Large and loving family woman, and her oldest daughter was one of the first Queenriders....
A new world to explore, and a home to call her own she named Ruatha.

Re: If you had to be a character...

Hmmm I think I'd rather like to be Killashandra and not for Lars either (you can have him Pam dear).
She got to go places and do things. She had an important job and while she made plenty of mistakes (some pretty big ones) along the way, she turned out pretty good in the end.

Failing that I wouldn't mind being Tia, once again lots of adventures and fun along the way, she was smart and seemed to have her future well in hand.

I think I'd like to be Kris. I'm not that adventurous myself, but you never know what you can do when you have to. I wouldn't mind being told I had to have babies, but for the love of a male like Zainal...

Re: If you had to be a character...

Not having read many of Anne's other books (i've read the Ship Who Sang and a couple of the Talent books) my characer has to come from Pern, and thus be Jaxom i think, because i relate with hiom the best (the age thing rather than anything else though).

Re: If you had to be a character...

Oh so many choices;

I'd love to be the Rowan or Damia for a day just to experience the power of having all that talent. Ditto would like to try on Lessa or F'lars shoes for the chance to ride and be bonded with a Dragon.
Not sure if I'd want to be in either position full-time though Rowan, Damia and Lessa all had pretty awful lives in their own ways and I don't think I'd want to have to endure the worst of the bad bits. Also, all of them are play a major part in the first line of defence against their own worlds very real and nasty enemies - don't know how I'd cope with that responsibility. Not sure what F'lars life pre-Dragonflight was like but whilst I'd be happy to try it for a day there's no way I'd want to be a man permanently, which also rules out 50% of the rest of the characters.

If I was going to be stuck there I think I'd pick either Sara from Restoree or Yana from PTB. Both are strong women but without the massive responsibilities of some of the other women in Annes books. Also I think that I could quite happily live on either of their worlds and it sounds like they're both going to have interesting (but hopefully happy) lives ahead of them.

Asside from Jaxom because of      :!: :pressies: ¡¡¡¡¡RUTH!!!!!, I'd probably go with one of the Hrrubans from Doona :bouncy:

edited for correction of species...I keep thinking of the other feline race ;)

When it came down to it, I'd probably still say Oklina or Desdra, but...Channa, maybe, or Carialle. I'm not sure I'd like Channa's boyfriend, but Simeon is my favorite brain. Carialle--I like her brawn, and I like her hobby!

I think maybe Kelly Reeve. She has a nice home and kids on a beautiful planet. Granted, hubby does bring home some rather unusual dinner guests from time to time, but I'd love to share a planet with a race of sentient cats.

Re: If you had to be a character...

That's a difficult one, because I'd prefer to be me on Pern, or any of her other worlds, with a preference for Doona

I asked hubby the question, he answered Karal (Mercedes Lackey character) and then when I'd called him up on it he finally settled on Jaxom

I think I'd like to be Menolly, I'd love to be able to sing and compose

Not Kris Bjornsen, her life was too physical and violent for me

Re: If you had to be a character...

I'd have to say it would be Killashandra. Aside from the gender thing, the idea of entire mountain sides singing back at you has been an image that has stayed with me from the first moment I read the first book. :2cent:

Re: If you had to be a character...

I'd like to be Kris. She's exactly the sort of woman I read sci-fi for, attractive, (of course) resourceful, and handy in a pinch. Also, to be in on the leadership of a rebellion? How cool would that be!

The "to explore strange new worlds" part makes me want to be her too.

The random Trek references that she tends to make would mean that no one would be the wiser if I was suddenly her.

hmmm, so many people to choose from. I think I'd like to be Kris cause it'd be so cool to start a new world!

i was gonna say Tai, but then reconcidered.
hmm...
Sorka, most likely
or Menolly
(jaxom, but the gender thing)

Re: If you had to be a character...

*Oh Grin!*

Menolly! It's the previously stated; music, music and more music! And the travel accomodations are simply glorious! :dragon:
Not to mention there's not a dull day, unless it just happens to be a good day for one down at Cove Hold.

Other than that, Lunzie. Oh how her life intrigues me! To see history, albeit it in spasmodic chapters, in such a spanning timeline! She really had developed an understanding of things during those years, that made her wise beyond her natural, and Sleeper's years. Yes, Lunzie, most definately.

And i can't ignore the yearning to be a Dragonrider... just choosing one is beyond me. But to begin a new life on the hot Hatching Ground sands, your life's greatest companion and friend newly hatched, glistening and exhultant, as you rush to meet each other. Just to hear those wonderful words in your own mind, "I am here! My name is...." And know at that moment that you will never be alone again, and that that little Dragon will always love you no matter what... wow!

yeah, a dragonrider would be awesome...
or how about a journeyman/woman harper, then a candidate?
then you could be weyrsinger!

Re: If you had to be a character...

Probably either Menolly (I don't mind a gender-change either) or Piemur. My personality is a lot in common with their's. And my first reaction to the fire-lizards would have very much like Menolly's first reaction. Though only difference, though, would be that I'm not especially talented in making music.

Re: If you had to be a character...

Easy....Just look at my cat's names :bouncy:

Lunzie....I love the strength in her and her adapting to things she can't change i.e. coming out of deep sleep yet again

Jax.......For the strength of character in refusing to believe that the egg should be left to die and his stubbornness, fighting for and total love of Ruth

Farli......(Named for Piemur really as she a girl) but I found of all the firedragons, she seemed to have formed a personality which complements her owners Happy go lucky attitude to life!

Its one thing that I like in Anne’s writing is that all the main women have an inner strength and a determination to find their way in their world.
I hate movies where the women screech and squeal the entire way through, then suddenly if they have to handle, say a gun, they scream all the more!

Hmm, this is hard.
On Pern, probably Debera, because she got the dragon and the man.
And hmm, maybe Laria. I really like her.

That would be a fun choice, Topaz! Way to think outside the box! :D

The easy answer is Killashandra of course :D Travel, singing and of course Lars Dahl  However, there are other characters I like a lot that I think I'd like to be to, just can't think of any of them at present. :D

If I could be one of the characters of Anne Mccaffreys worlds, I would be Ruth. To fly any where I want in an instant, and to do it with my best friend. To swim in the warm waters of cove hold, with the dragons and people who visit there. To be the only white dragon in all the history of Pern. This would truly be a wonder beyond words.

Re: If you had to be a character...

Hmmm. Thought needed here .... out of all the series'. To make it easier (and I am not making any kind of statement here) I am going to discount the female characters, depsite how I love them! LOL

Hmmm. In the BB series, Keff. It was either him or Alex. Whilst I would love to be a Brain, we don't get to see many male brains.

Acorna: The younger brother ..... oh lordee, I can't even remember the surname, let alone his name. Ugh. Help? There were 3 - the sister and 2 brothers. One was called Pal I think..... ugh.

PTB: At first I thought I would say Sean, but it isn't. I think probably ... Faber Nike (Marmie's assistant) because he is dependable, gets to travel and needs to be responsible whilst still having fun.

Pern: Not sure. A blue-rider we haven't met yet :D

Crystal Singer: Trag

Planet Pirates: I started off liking Kai, but I didn't like how he changed and seemed to go really weak and insipid (obviously not talking about his actual illness here).

Freedom: I don't think offhand that I wished to be anyone there

Not a fan of Doona so I don't remember anyone from those books striking a chord!!

As for the others ......

In Nimisha's Ship I always liked the other shipwrecked guy. Nimisha got with Jonathan (I think?) but the other guy was always softly there in the background. I liked him.

You may have noticed that I omitted a series or 2. It may be my memory for some, but I haven't mentioned one on purpose as it contains my final choice LOL

Talent: Rojer Eagles. I know a lot of ppl don't like him for one reason or another (mostly similar to the anti-Jaxom arguments I think), but it's cool being the younger brother sometimes. You don't have all the familial responsibility and can avoid the same pitfalls that your older siblings stumble into! Plus the fact he is a Prime and gets to be top Talent on an unexplored planet. Fantastic!! Love it!!

Re: If you had to be a character...

My first choice would be Menolly or Kris Bjornsen. I'd love to live a life of music with plenty of travel and family time when needed. I'd love to live in a "start-up" planet, even if I'm partial to my amenities when available, and I love the attitude of both women. I also would quite like being Piemur.

I'd also like being either Manora or Silvina, the support managers, behind-the-scenes-get-things-done type of folk.

Re: If you had to be a character...

Dragonsberd, I agree with you, I would love to be one or both of these women. To know everything that was going on, and to be able to help things in the background all come out right. That would have been alot of fun. Being in the midst of everything, with the hustle and bustle, and the energy of the Weyr around me. Realy good idea.

Re: If you had to be a character...

My favorite character of Anne's is Lunzie. I like her ability to adapt to so many changes. She had to deal with so much that it is truly daunting to think of her experiences happening to anyone and them staying sane. If I could be a character it would be Lunzie.

My favourite male character is Robinton, by a mile - among the females - I'd be Sassinak! :note: :rocket:

Re: If you had to be a character...

I'd want to be a blue dragon. I'd sure fit the deal 'cause my memory's just about as bad. (laughs) But if I had to be a human, I'd want to be Meanne from "An Exchange Of Gifts". To be so connected to plants, to be able to be resourceful and live on my own, and to find someone to share the rest of my life with.... That would be heaven.

Or a clairvoyant. A clairvoyant is cool too. Fiction needs more clairvoyants.

I think I'd have to be Merelan.

Either that or a top-rank concert singer from the CS universe :D :note:

Re: If you had to be a character...

Definately Lunzie!

Her experiences span way beyond the normal lifetime. I definately wish I could be around in a few hundred years to see what's happening. Plus, her occupation lies in medicine, which happenes to be my interest too!

Plus, traveling in space and seeing live dinosaurs are top on my list!

Re: If you had to be a character...

Definitely Killashandra... to go out into the Crystal ranges, and feel the crystal vibrating all around you... to experience the morning song of crystal waking up... to go to Optheria and Angel Island... To sail the Ballybran seas... and to rise to the top of your profession in a very prestigeous Guild... Plus she has spunk! Lars would be a nice bonus too... he loves Killa soo darn much.
But I guess I would like to skip the part where she gets beaten almost to death by an angry mob on Optheria. :-(
